The Regionalliga Nordost has been a league in German football since 2012 . It is one of five regional leagues that form the fourth-highest division in the league system in Germany . It was introduced for the 2012/13 season after the regional league was reformed under the 3rd division .
Game mode
The league, made up of 16 teams from 2012 to May 2015 and 18 teams from the 2015/16 season, is played in a round- robin tournament in which everyone competes against each other once at home and away. The top-ranked team takes part in the promotion round to the 3rd division , should they forego this, the right goes to the next-ranked club. The rules of the Northeast German Football Association (NOFV) stipulate that the teams in 17th and 18th place relegate to the Oberliga Nordost . Depending on whether the master is promoted to the 3rd division and whether clubs from the NOFV area relegate from the 3rd division, the number of relegated teams to the Oberliga Nordost can increase. In addition, there have been repeated cancellations of teams or insolvency applications by clubs. These processes affect the number of athletes who have been relegated.
A maximum of seven second teams from DFL clubs should play in one of the regional leagues. The maximum number has never been reached in the Regionalliga Nordost. Second teams from third division clubs are not permitted.

For the 2012/13 season , the DFB transferred the main responsibility for the regional league to the five league associations. At the same time, the three seasons North, West and South were replaced by the five regional leagues North , Northeast, West , Southwest and Bavaria . The Northeast German Football Association is therefore primarily responsible for the Regionalliga Nordost .
Promotion and relegation regulation
The following regulations exist:
- Promotion to the 3rd soccer league : The master is entitled to participate in the promotion games to the 3rd league .
- Relegation to the Northeast Football League : The number of relegated athletes varies between one team and a maximum of five teams. There is only one sporting relegated team if no team is relegated from the 3rd division, a team is promoted to the 3rd division and no club deregisters its team from the league and no team is excluded. There are five relegated athletes if three teams are relegated from the 3rd division, no team is promoted to the 3rd division and all regional league teams from 2nd to 13th place want or are allowed to remain in the league. In the 2016/17 season there was no athletic relegation to the major league. The TSG Neustrelitz finished last and took part in the season 2017/18 the Regional in part, because two other teams logged off from this.
- Promotion to the Regionalliga Nordost: The champions of the two seasons of the Oberliga Nordost are promoted directly. Further promoters are possible in order to reach the target strength of 18 teams. This case occurs when clubs voluntarily withdraw from the regional league or are excluded from the league. If necessary, the third or fifth promoted player will be determined in playoffs between representatives from the upper league squadrons North and South.
- Review: These regulations have been in effect since the 2015/16 season . Before that, the number of promoted players from the league also increased when the regional league champion left for the third division and no team was relegated from the third division to the regional division (e.g. 2014/15 season ). Since 2015/16, however, one less team has been relegated from the regional to the major league.

Promotion games to the 3rd division
Until the 2017/18 season, the champions of the Northeast Regional League had to compete in a double round against a qualified representative from another regional league, which was drawn beforehand. The winner rose to the 3rd division . All champions of the regional leagues as well as the runners-up in the regional league, whose region had the most clubs and DFB members, qualified for the promotion games.
In 2019 and 2020, three regional leagues were already determined before the start of the season, from which three clubs would be promoted directly to the third division, and two additional regional leagues from which two clubs would play for another promotion place in a double round. In the summer of 2020, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig took part in promotion games as champions of the Regionalliga Nordost.
From the 2020/21 season there will be a double round for the fourth promotion place between two representatives from the three regional leagues Bavaria , North and Northeast, with each of the leagues mentioned providing a direct climber every three years.
