The FC Viktoria Köln 1904 e. V. is a football club from the Höhenberg district of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine . The club was founded on June 22, 2010 as the successor to the insolvent SCB Viktoria Köln . The first men's team was promoted to the 3rd division in 2019 . The venue is the Höhenberg sports park with a capacity of 10,001 seats.

The roots of the club go back to 1904, when the oldest parent club, FC Germania Kalk , was founded. There were numerous mergers - under the club names Preußen Dellbrück and SC Viktoria Köln they played in the then still first-class Oberliga West and between 1978 and 1981 in the 2nd Bundesliga North - before the connection to higher-class football was lost. After 1. FC Köln and next to SC Fortuna Köln, the club is now one of the most successful in Cologne football.

history

Like all larger Cologne football clubs, Viktoria is the result of several mergers. The district teams of that time were to grow into large associations with the aim of becoming associations for the entire city. In the consciousness of the Cologne people, Viktoria and its predecessor clubs always remained representatives of the right bank of the Rhine. The football clubs on the left bank of the Rhine are or were FC , Fortuna and VfL 1899 or their predecessors.

Structural development

On July 1, 1904, FC Germania Kalk, the oldest club in today's Viktoria, was founded. This merged in 1909 with FC Kalk, founded in 1905, to form SV Kalk 04. Two years later, the merger with Mülheimer FC, founded in 1906, to VfR 1904 Mülheim-Kalk followed. After the previously independent cities of Kalk and Mülheim had been incorporated into Cologne in 1910 and 1914 , the name was changed to VfR Cologne 04 rrh in 1918 .

Another parent club is the Mülheimer SV 06 . This was founded in 1906 as the Mülheimer Ballspiel-Club and later merged with FC Union Mülheim to form Mülheimer SV 06. On July 29, 1949, Mülheimer SV 06 and VfR Köln 04 rrh merged. to SC Rapid Cologne , which settled in today's Sportpark Höhenberg. On July 10, 1957 SC Rapid merged with Prussia Dellbrück to form SC Viktoria Köln . Prussia Dellbrück was founded on April 6, 1912 as FK Preußen Dellbrück. In January 1919 the name was changed to FV 1912 Dellbrück and in 1926 to SC Preußen Dellbrück.

On July 1, 1994, SC Viktoria Köln merged with SC Brück, which was founded in 1930, to form SCB Preußen Köln . The name Prussia should be reminiscent of the parent club Prussia Dellbrück. On June 11, 2002, the renaming of SCB Preußen Köln in SCB Viktoria Köln became effective. The SCB Viktoria Köln had to file for bankruptcy on August 1, 2010. Today's FC Viktoria Köln was founded to save the youth work of SCB Viktoria Köln.

Sporting development

The VfR Cologne 04 rrh. won the West German championship in 1926 and failed in the first round of the German championship with 1: 2 at the Berlin club SV Norden-Nordwest . In 1935 and 1937, the VfR secured the championship of the first-class Gauliga Mittelrhein , but failed at the national level in the group phase. In 1947 the team landed in third place in the championship round of the British zone after a 4-1 victory over Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . Those on the right bank of the Rhine were qualified for the Oberliga West , introduced in 1947 . As penultimate, the team had to relegate, a year later they failed to qualify for the newly introduced II Division .

The Mülheimer SV 06, which won the Middle Rhine Gaume Championship in 1934 and 1940, was similarly successful. In the qualifying games for the German championship, the end came in the group stage. After the war, the Mülheimers qualified for the newly created II. Division, after the merger with the VfR 04 rrh. there under the name SC Rapid Cologne. Founded as a bearer of hope, SC Rapid was unable to meet expectations during its almost eight years of existence. After three years, the team was relegated from the II. Division and never returned.

Prussia Dellbrück, which was insignificant from a sporting point of view before the Second World War , suddenly dashed forward after the war. Only after the fourth play-off did the Prussians have to relegate from the Oberliga West . After the direct resurgence, they became sensational runner-up in 1950 . In the German championship , Kickers Offenbach prevented Dellbrücker from reaching the final with a 3-0 win in the replay.

On July 10, 1957, Prussia Dellbrück and SC Rapid Köln merged to form SC Viktoria Köln to put a stop to the dominance of 1. FC Köln. But even the Victoria ranked only in the middle of the league. She did not succeed in catching up with FC on the left bank of the Rhine, although she employed such well-known coaches and players as Hennes Weisweiler , Erich Ribbeck , Gero Bisanz and Jean Löring during this time . In the 1962/63 season , Viktoria took part in the trade fair trophy , but failed in the first round at Ferencváros Budapest .

From 1963 to 1972 and in the 1973/74 season, Viktoria played in the then second-rate Regionalliga West . In the 1974/75 season she caused a sensation in the DFB Cup when she reached the second round after victories over the Stuttgarter Kickers , Usinger TSG and Eintracht Braunschweig , in which Borussia Dortmund could only prevail in a replay. From 1978 to 1981 SC Viktoria played in the 2nd Bundesliga, then until 1994 in the third-class Oberliga Nordrhein .

In the 1994/95 season, SCB Preußen Köln played in the newly created Regionalliga West / Südwest; SC Brück qualified. Despite immediate relegation, the club provided the top scorer in Jörg Beyel . In the following years, the team commuted between the Oberliga Nordrhein and the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein . In 2010 she had to relegate to the regional league, but the now insolvent club no longer competed there.

FC Viktoria Cologne

On June 22, 2010, a successor club was founded in 1904, FC Viktoria Köln. In the 2010/11 season he took over all youth teams of SCB Viktoria including their league membership. The newly founded club was supposed to start in the regional league, but was downgraded to the district league D by the association. On February 24, 2011, the members of FC Viktoria unanimously decided to include the outsourced senior football department of FC Junkersdorf in their club. Since he had become champion of the Middle Rhine League in the 2010/11 season, FC Viktoria was able to compete in the NRW League from the 2011/12 season. From this point on, the entrepreneur and patron of TSV Germania Windeck , Franz-Josef Wernze, who led the club from the district league C to the regional league, also got involved with the Viktoria.

The enhanced with numerous Windecker players team was one point ahead of the Sportfreunde Siegen master of NRW-Liga 2011/12 season and made with Mike Wunderlich also the top scorer. During the season z. B. Rot Weiss Ahlen beaten 9-0. The first season in the West Regional Football League ( 2012/13 ) ended the Viktoria after a starting phase with eight wins in a row and after two coach changes ( Wolfgang Jerat for Heiko Scholz , Ralf Aussem for Jerat) in 6th place in the table. In the second Regionalliga season 2013/14 under the new coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz , the club improved and was able to finish the season in 4th place in the table. In addition, the Middle Rhine Cup was won in 2014 with a victory in the final against FC Wegberg-Beeck . Thus the club qualified for the DFB-Pokal 2014/15 . There Viktoria Köln lost to the first division Hertha BSC in the first round .

The 2014/15 season was initially mixed and in December 2014 the club separated from Wollitz and signed Tomasz Kaczmarek . This led Viktoria Köln to third place in the table and, with a renewed win of the Middle Rhine Cup in the final against the Bonner SC, for the second time in a row in the DFB Cup. In the DFB-Pokal 2015/16 Viktoria Köln reached the 2nd round with a 2-1 (0-1) victory over the second division Union Berlin . There the club was clearly defeated by the first division club Bayer 04 Leverkusen with 0: 6 (0: 3). In the 2015/16 season , Viktoria did not play for promotion, she finished the season again in 3rd place. However, the Middle Rhine Cup could be defended. In the final, the team prevailed against Fortuna Köln on penalties. Kaczmarek's contract was not renewed at the end of the season because he had started a football coaching course and the club did not trust him to face such a double burden. As his successor, Marco Antwerpen was signed by league competitor Rot Weiss Ahlen .

In the first round of the DFB Cup 2016/17 Viktoria Köln was only defeated on penalties against the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg . On April 29, 2017, Viktoria secured the championship of the Regionalliga West ahead of schedule on the 31st matchday of the 2016/17 season with a 5-1 home win over Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. The home game in the promotion round to the 3rd division against FC Carl Zeiss Jena lost Cologne 2: 3, in Thuringia the club managed a 1-0 victory, but because of the away goals rule, Viktoria missed promotion.

In December 2017, Marco Antwerp was released from work as a trainer after holding talks with Preußen Münster , where he also moved a short time later. On an interim basis, Roland Koch , head of the youth center, took over the training. In January 2018, Olaf Janßen was introduced as the new coach, who had been head coach at FC St. Pauli in the second division until December 2017 . In the 2017/18 championship , Viktoria finished in second place just behind the later promoted KFC Uerdingen 05 . The club was able to win the Middle Rhine Cup for the fourth time. Viktoria won the final after extra time against Alemannia Aachen .

For the 2018/19 season, Olaf Janßen moved as assistant coach to Bruno Labbadia for Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . His assistant Patrick Glöckner followed him as head coach . In the 2018/19 DFB Cup , Viktoria lost 3-1 to first division club RB Leipzig after taking the lead in the meantime . On November 3, 2018, the club secured the autumn championship early. In May 2019, the club dismissed Patrick Glöckner after the penultimate matchday. At that time Viktoria Köln was one point ahead of first place. Due to the negative tendency, however, the sporting management saw the goal of promotion in jeopardy and replaced Glöckner with the previous U-19 coach Jürgen Kohler , who had only achieved promotion in the Bundesliga two days earlier with the U-19. The assistant coach Markus Brzenska was also on leave, his position took U-23 coach Özkan Turp. Both the head of the youth department, Roland Koch , was put in an advisory capacity. In the last home game of the season, Viktoria Köln made it to the third division for the first time on May 18, 2019 with a 1-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach II . The decisive goal was scored by captain Mike Wunderlich with a penalty.

As the new coach for the season 2019/20 was Pavel Dotchev presented, were added eleven predominantly third league experienced recruits. They finished the first third division season with 12th place.

Second team

FC Viktoria Köln II, the second men's team, played in the sixth class season 1 of the Landesliga Mittelrhein in the 2019/20 season . As the champion of season 1 of the Mittelrhein district league, he was promoted to the state league in 2017, after only one season of league membership. The second team should not be seen as a "traditional" collection basin for the professionals, but as a "perspective alternative" to gain experience in the senior sector. For the season 2019/20 drew Ernesto Jiménez Carratala up from the second team to the pros.

On June 7, 2020, the club announced that the second team would be deregistered from play for the 2020/21 season, the focus should therefore be shifted towards the U 19 and U 17 in the youth field.

Young talent center

On December 14, 2013, the foundation stone for the general renovation and expansion of the youth and performance center "Hennes Weisweiler" in the Höhenberg sports park was laid. The namesake, Hennes Weisweiler , was the coach of SC Viktoria Köln from 1958 to 1964. The association celebrated the opening of the youth and performance center on July 26, 2014. On 1 July 2017 took Roland Koch the post of Head of Youth and performance center, under his leadership, the recognition came as a youth training center by the DFB . Since July 1, 2019, the youth and performance center "Hennes Weisweiler" has officially been one of 57 licensed young talent centers. At the end of the 2019/20 season, Roland Koch will leave the club and take a creative break.

Stadion

Main stand of the stadium

The Viktoria venue is the Höhenberg sports park , which is also known as the "Airport Stadium". The stadium was completely rebuilt between 1929 and 1931. The first game after the renovation took place on September 20, 1931, the opponent was FC Schalke 04. The main stand offers 3,000 covered seats.

Extensive modernization work was carried out for the 2012/13 regional league season. From May to August 2012 the Höhenberg sports park was renovated for 1.1 million euros. Among other things, a floodlight system was installed, which should also meet the demands of higher playing classes. After the renovation, the stadium offered space for 6,214 spectators.

As part of the 2005 Confederation Cup and the 2006 World Cup , the national soccer teams of Tunisia , Japan and France used the sports park for training sessions. There is also an artificial turf field next to the stadium , where the Viktoria junior teams play and train.

In August 2014, Viktoria's patron Franz-Josef Wernze announced plans for a new stadium, as the Höhenberg sports park is not suitable for the third division. Wernze named the GelreDome in Arnhem, the Netherlands, as a model and brought up a joint use by Viktoria and Fortuna Cologne.

After the promotion to the 3rd soccer league 2019/20 , the Sportpark Höhenberg must meet the requirements of the league, u. a. at least 10,000 spectator seats. In mid-June 2019, the DFB gave its approval, on condition that the Cologne offices also give the green light for the renovation. Finally, the city's environmental department agreed and Viktoria was allowed to play its third division home games in the sports park.
