The 2015/16 season of Regionalliga West was the eighth season of the regional football league as the fourth-highest division in Germany. It was opened with the game Rot Weiss Ahlen against Alemannia Aachen on July 31, 2015 and ended on May 21, 2016 with the 38th matchday.

Season course

Preseason

Venues of the Regionalliga West 2015/16

With the second representation of Borussia Dortmund , a club was relegated from last year's 3rd league season and played in the Regionalliga West again after two years. TuS Erndtebrück and FC Wegberg-Beeck celebrated premieres in the Regionalliga West . Back in the fourth division was the former second division club Rot Weiss Ahlen , who played fifth class after relegation from the third division in 2011. Also represented was SSVg Velbert , which managed to return to the Regionalliga West after relegation in 2014. For the first time, a Westphalian club was able to make it into the main round of the DFB Cup by placing it in the Regionalliga West .

Before the start of the season, the majority of the coaches did not name a top favorite for the championship, but expected a close race between several top teams. Almost all instructors counted Aachen, Viktoria Köln, Oberhausen and Essen among the master candidates. Most of the coaches were among the favorites, including last year's third division team from Dortmund and last year's champions from Mönchengladbach.

First round

The opening game on July 31, 2015 took place between Rot Weiss Ahlen and Alemannia Aachen . Sportfreunde Lotte became autumn champions .

Second half

Last year's champions Mönchengladbach II went into the winter break as the first in the table (December 14th to January 28th, 2016). After Lotte's 30th game of the season, the Sportfreunde were determined ahead of time as participants in the play-off against the Bundesliga club Sportfreunde Siegen for a place in the DFB Cup. Gladbach and Lotte remained the first contenders for the championship for almost the entire second half of the season, which was ultimately won by Sportfreunde Lotte after 33 games. The Lotter won their second championship title in the Regionalliga West after the championship in 2013 . In the two promotion games , the sports fans were able to prevail against the southwest champion SV Waldhof Mannheim and move up to the 3rd division .

The bottom of the table, FC Wegberg-Beeck, was the first to be relegated back in March because the club did not apply for a license for the following regional league season. Further relegated teams were FC Kray , who had to leave the regional league after two seasons, and the promoted TuS Erndtebrück and SSVg Velbert . The season ended on May 21, 2016 after 36 match days. The first FC Köln II class was still uncertain. Thanks to the Lotter rise, the Cologne team was ultimately able to hold onto the class.

1In the qualifying game for the 1st round of the DFB-Pokal 2016/17 , another participant of the Football and Athletics Association Westphalia was determined in the DFB-Pokal 2016/17. Qualified for the qualification match were Sportfreunde Lotte and Sportfreunde Siegen , who had the best-placed but not already qualified for the DFB Cup via the Westphalia Cup, and Westphalian clubs in the Regional League West and Oberliga Westfalen 2015/16 eligible to participate in the DFB Cup were. With a 2-0 victory, the Lotter reached the first round of the cup.
2As a rule, the five worst-placed teams were relegated to the top leagues. The number of relegated players (to be determined in terms of sport) decreased due to the following regulations:
  • With the promotion of Sportfreunde Lotte to the 3rd division, the number of relegated teams was reduced by one team.
  • FC Wegberg-Beeck had not submitted a license application for the 2016/17 regional league season and was therefore determined to be relegated. This reduced the number of relegated teams (to be determined in terms of sport) by one team.

  11. After the standing stand was completed in July 2014, there is still no updated capacity officially announced by the club. Capacity is therefore based on an estimate: 90m × 4 steps × 2 standing places per step meter + 95m × 1.2m × 2 standing places per m² on the area in front of the first step. Total: 948 standing places. Of the previously 600 uncovered standing spaces on three sides (spread over approx. 200m), the construction of the grandstand will in turn mean that there are no standing spaces (standing around 100m long). Overall, the current stadium capacity increased from 2,489 visitors so net by about 648 standing on now about 3140 seats (2489 + 648 = 3137). Calculation of capacity based on Part 1 § 1 (2) VStättVO NRW: Ordinance on the construction and operation of meeting places (Meeting Place Ordinance - VStättVO -).
