The soccer club Kray 1909/31 , or FC Kray for short, is a German soccer club that is based in the Kray district of Essen .
history
SV Kray 09, DJK SV Kray 09
The club was founded in 1909 by Willi Schröer and other football enthusiasts as SV Kray 09. Initially, games were played on a square near the Joachim colliery, and in 1911 the club moved to the square at Döppelhahn . If up to then there was no association or denomination, in 1920 they joined the DJK Sports Association . The club name changed to DJK SV Kray 09.
VfL Kray 1931
In 1931 the association for physical exercises Krey was founded from initially loose meetings. The house of Wilhelm Kefenhörster (now Kuhaupt-Schwenn) became the first clubhouse. Kefenhörster leased a plot of land on Wilhelmstrasse from the Ridder heirs to build a sports facility there. Today the street is called Ridderstraße. Until 1935, VfL played in the Gaus Gelsenkirchen district league. From 1935 Kray was assigned to the Essen district. During the Second World War , the club managed to keep the game going despite the entry of many players into the army. After the Second World War, all clubs were initially dissolved by the military government or any club life was banned.
As early as the summer of 1945, VfL was able to start playing again and played in the district league in the first season after the war . According to average results, the club rose to the 2nd district class in 1953 , but rose again the following year. In 1964, the VfL succeeded again in promotion to the district league. The class could be held until 1974. 1980 succeeded again the promotion to the district league.
Merger to form FC Kray
In 1986 the youth departments of VfL Kray and DJK Kray ran food and drink sales in order to finance the costs of the departments. The idea of a merger of the two clubs arose from this collaboration. In 1987 FC Kray 09/31 was founded. A club was created with four senior and 13 youth teams. Since the first team of VfL played in the district league, while the DJK played in the district league, the new club was assigned to the district league. Already in the first season of the new club was promoted to the national league . In the 1988/89 season the march into the Association League Niederrhein succeeded . In 1993 the FCK rose again from the national league. In 1996 FCK won the city cup with a 2-1 victory over Rot-Weiss Essen .
In 2000, promotion to the association league was achieved again. Three years later the club had actually managed to stay in the league, but Rheydter SV filed for bankruptcy and withdrew its first team from the Oberliga Nordrhein . Due to a new bankruptcy law, the club was allowed to start a fresh start in the association league. Until then, the rule was that insolvent clubs in the lowest district class had to start again. This division made the 13th place in the association league a relegation place and FC Kray had to return to the national league.
2010 until today
After almost relegating to the district league a year earlier, the championship in the regional league succeeded in the 2010/11 season and FC Kray rose to the Lower Rhine league. In 2011 the DFB Bundestag decided to reform the regional league. Instead of the three seasons, there should be five independent leagues from the 2012/13 season , which, under the direction of the state and regional associations , should act as the substructure of the 3rd football league . The first three clubs rose from the NRW League directly to the new Regionalliga West . Places four to seven played against the champions of the association leagues (Lower Rhine, Middle Rhine and Westphalia) in a relegation round with a return leg, the further qualification places for the fourth-highest German division. FC Kray, champions of the Niederrhein Association League, was drawn from the traditional KFC Uerdingen 05 . On June 7, 2012, the first leg was in the Grotenburg Stadium in Krefeld . FC Kray surprisingly won the game 1-0 in front of 6072 spectators. The KFC Uerdingen had to accept two yellow-red cards in the course of the game.
The second leg on June 10, 2012 had to be moved to the Uhlenkrug Stadium, as the KrayArena, an artificial turf facility where FCK normally plays its home games, was not sufficient for the expected number of spectators. Over 2000 fans came from Uerdingen alone. A total of 4500 spectators were there, including many fans of Rot-Weiss Essen. Traditionally, many members and supporters of FC Kray are also fans of RWE. They supported the little neighbor in the fight for advancement. FC Kray also won the second leg. In the end it was 2-0 and FCK rose to the Regionalliga West. With this, the club managed to move up from the seventh to the fourth division within three years.
According to its own information, the club would not be able to play many of the regional league home games in the local KrayArena , as the audience capacity is too small, home and guest fans cannot be separated and there are not enough parking spaces. Although the West German Football and Athletics Association (WFLV) has significantly reduced the minimum requirements for the regional league, the facility in Kray is too small due to the expected number of spectators at games against Rot-Weiss Essen, Wuppertaler SV or Rot-Weiß Oberhausen the club had to move to the larger Essen stadium . After a regional league season, the club had to relegate to the Oberliga Niederrhein. In the following season, the FC Kray took second place in the table and thus managed to immediately return to the Regionalliga West, as the champions of the Oberliga Niederrhein, SV Hönnepel-Niedermörmter , waived promotion. As the penultimate of the Regionalliga West 2015/16 , however, FC Kray rose again after only one year in the Oberliga Niederrhein. The downward trend continued there, so that coach Stefan Blank was replaced by U19 coach Muhammet Isiktas after the third match day. On November 29, 2016, it then leaked that Isiktas should only train the U19 team in the future. Until a new coach was hired for the first team, the new sporting director Christoph Klöppel took over the training of the relegation-threatened league club.
As the last of the Oberliga Niederrhein, the club was relegated to the sixth-class Landesliga Niederrhein after the end of the 2016/17 season . Two years later, the rise succeeded.
