The SpVg Schonnebeck (officially: Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck 1910 eV ) is a sports club from the Essen district of Schonnebeck . The first soccer team was promoted to the Oberliga Niederrhein in 2015 .

history

The club was founded on June 29, 1910 as Spiel und Sport Schonnebeck . Two years later, the Schonnebeck ball game club was founded . Both clubs later merged to form the Union Schonnebeck ball game club . The club has had its current name since 1920. In 1935, the game association moved to its place on Schettersbusch, which is still used today. In terms of sport, the Schonnebeckers reached the second highest division in the 1930s.

After the war ended , the SpVg was one of the founding members of the then first-class Ruhr district league, from which the team promptly relegated. In 1950 they went down to the district class, from which they rose again two years later. In 1959 the Schonnebeckers became champions with a 1-0 win against the amateurs of Rot-Weiss Essen and were promoted to the state league . After two years, he was relegated to the district class, before being relegated to the district class in 1968. In response, the association stepped up its youth work. Only in 1975 succeeded in returning to the district class and two years later the game association rose to the state league.

1984 achieved the greatest success in the club's history with promotion to the Niederrhein Association League . Two years later, the better goal difference against VfB Bottrop saved the Schonnebecker from relegation, before the team in 1987 had to relegate to the regional league when they were knocked off the table and were quickly passed through to the district league. In 2006 the team returned to the regional league and two years later made the leap into the Niederrheinliga , from which the team had to relegate due to the worse goal difference compared to 1. FC Viersen . So the Schonnebeckers have been playing in the national league again since 2009. Six years later, the SpVg rose to the Oberliga Niederrhein.

In the 2015/16 promotion season , the team from the north of Essen landed in fifth place and thus became the sporting number two in Essen men's football for the first time, ahead of FC Kray and Schwarz-Weiß Essen . In the 2016/17 season, Schonnebeck made it to the quarter-finals in the Niederrhein Cup, where they only lost 2-0 to their big city rivals Rot-Weiss Essen in extra time . In the Oberliga Niederrhein, the team was runner-up behind KFC Uerdingen 05 in 2017 and runner-up behind SV Straelen in 2018 .
