Sportfreunde Niederwenigern (officially: Sportfreunde Niederwenigern 1924 eV ) is a sports club from the Niederwenigern district of Hattingen in the Ennepe-Ruhr district . The men's soccer team was promoted to the Niederrhein Oberliga in 2019 .

history

The association was founded in 1924. In contrast to most of the clubs from Hattingen, Sportfreunde belong to the Lower Rhine Football Association and not to the Westphalia Football and Athletics Association . In addition to soccer, the club also offers volleyball , badminton and body & soul .

After many years in the lower divisions, he was promoted to the Lower Rhine regional league for the first time in 2011 . Four years later, the Sportfreunde only secured relegation in a play-off round. On the last day of the match, a 6-1 win against Grün-Weiß Wuppertal secured the league stay. In 2018, the team finished third in the national league season 2 and had the chance of promotion to the Oberliga Niederrhein in playoffs against SC Union Nettetal . The first and second leg ended 1-0 for the respective hosts before the Nettetalers prevailed on penalties . A year later, the Sportfreunde were runner-up behind FC Kray and were promoted to the league.

The home venue has been the Glück-Auf sports field since 1962 , which is located above the disused Neuglück colliery . This resulted in a daybreak during a game in 1967 . In 2009 the facility was completely renovated and artificial turf was laid.
