The Rheydter Spielverein e. V. , or Rheydter SV for short , is a sports club from the Mönchengladbach district of Rheydt in North Rhine-Westphalia with the legally independent sections football , hockey and tennis , handball and table tennis . The club is also simply called "RSV" or "Spö".

Origin and structure

The RSV was founded on December 21, 1905 by football-loving members of the Rheydter Gymnastics Club in 1847, after the management of the gymnastics club had prohibited the purchase of a soccer ball. Since October 22, 1909, the club has been registered in the club register as Rheydter Spielverein, an association for the care of physical exercises .

In addition to the traditional club, there are legally independent registered clubs for the individual sporting sections under the name Rheydter Spielverein :

  1. Rheydter Spielverein Hockey + Tennis (entry in the register of associations 2001)
  2. Rheydter Spielverein Handball (entry in the register of associations 2002)
  3. Rheydter Spielverein table tennis (entry in the register of associations 2003)

Significant stations

In 1906 the club was accepted into the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Spielverband and the athletics department was founded. Already in 1908 they won the district soccer championship. In 1912 the hockey department was founded in Rheydter SV. The inauguration of the stadium on Jahnstrasse took place in 1922. In 1948 the stadium expansion began from a capacity of 25,000 to over 30,000. In 1950 the table tennis department was founded through the integration of the Odenkirchen 05/07 association . In 1950, the soccer team rose under the direction of player-coach Fritz Pliska in the then highest German league, the Oberliga West . The descent in 1952 was followed by direct resurgence under coach Hennes Weisweiler in 1953, but a year later they descended again into the second division. Until today this was the last guest appearance of the soccer team of the "Spö" in the top division. The first football team rose to the district league in 2017.

In 1965 the 1st hockey team was promoted to the league. The men's hockey team played in the 1st Regionalliga West in the 2015/16 indoor season and in the 1st Association League Group B West in the 2015/16 field season.

Venue

Until the end of 2019, Rheydter SV played its home games in the Jahnstadion . This is to be demolished in 2020 and the campus park is to be built there by the city of Mönchengladbach. Contrary to initial plans that the RSV should play on the district sports facility Odenkirchen-Süd during the construction period, it temporarily plays its home games on the Mülfort sports field. After completion at the end of 2020, the RSV should then return to the campus park.
