British Zone Championship (Football)
The British Zone Championship was a football competition that was held twice in the British zone of occupation after the Second World War . Until the founding of the Federal Republic and the GDR in 1949, regional football championships were held separately according to the four zones of occupation (and in Berlin as a whole ), but in the 1945/46 season only in the American and French zones and in the four-power city. In the British Zone, on the other hand, championship games were initially only permitted on a limited, sub-regional level under the supervision of the Zone Sports Council from the spring of 1946. The joint directive 23 of the Allied Control Council of December 17, 1945 explicitly required that "sports organizations of a local character" be bound by a district; In fact, the term “circle” was interpreted relatively generously, so that a nationwide league championship could take place in Hamburg and a “major league” could be formed in the southern part of Lower Saxony . However, a first North German championship had to be canceled at the behest of the British military government .
It was not until the 1946/47 season that a zone-wide football championship, also known as the "Northwest Zone Championship", was played for the first time in the British zone. As early as the 1947/48 season, the upper leagues north and west replaced the state, district or county leagues as the top division in the British occupation zone, after which the final round of the zone championship , which was held for the last time, served as a qualifying competition for the German championship , which was the first after the Second World War could take place again.
1945/46
In the first year after the Second World War - with the above-mentioned exceptions in Hamburg and southern Lower Saxony - leagues at district or county level were the highest football divisions in the British occupation zone. In contrast to the American and French zones, in which the Oberliga Süd ( Oberliga Süd ) was founded as early as November 1945 and the Oberliga Saar-Pfalz-Hessen (initially called the Oberliga Saar-Pfalz-Hessen ), the British military government only allowed regular football competitions within this framework to, with nine such championships taking place in northern Germany and six in western Germany, some under names such as Stadtliga Hamburg , Stadtmeisterschaft Osnabrück or championship of the district sports association Lübeck . The Linker Niederrhein district championship was not even played as a league, but in a cup competition mode.
In the districts of Niederrhein and Mittelrhein, the district championship leagues were preceded by local preliminary rounds, for which names such as first class or A-class were often used. Only the district champions from the Lower Rhine could then determine a national champion in a final round . In contrast, the final round of the North German championship was canceled after the quarter-finals on the instructions of the British military government. Accordingly, a final round of the British zone championship did not take place.
Northern Germany
The following clubs in Northern Germany became champions in the 1945/46 season:
ATSV Flensburg | → Schleswig-Holstein-North |
Eckernförder SV | → Schleswig-Holstein-Ost- "A" |
FVgg Kilia Kiel | → Schleswig-Holstein-Ost- "B" |
VfB Lübeck | → Schleswig-Holstein South |
Hamburger SV | → Hamburg |
TSV Braunschweig | → Lower Saxony-South |
Werder Bremen | → Bremen |
TuS Haste 01 | → Osnabrück |
Teutonia Uelzen | → Northeast Hanover |
Schleswig-Holstein
In Schleswig-Holstein , points could initially only be played in the vicinity of Kiel and Lübeck as well as in the northern part of the country, in the south-west of the country, on the other hand, there was no regular game operation at all (however, a number of clubs from the Hamburg area played, as traditionally, in Hamburg Association, where initially none of them belonged to the top class). In the points rounds, after the champions had been determined, not all games were played in order to be able to start the short-term final for the North German Championship, but also because the military government prohibited the continuation in some places.
“Districts” did not exist until 1948 and until then the regional associations of the state sports federation were responsible for playing games (except for the regional league formed in 1947). Nevertheless, the term was used in the press in part, and rightly so insofar as some of the leagues that were formed in the spring of 1946 have already exceeded the district boundaries:
District North Further participants were Schleswig 06 and TSV Kappeln .

District East A
The decision of the then competent Kiel Association for physical exercises "due to previous consistent achievements" to nominate the runner-up Holstein Kiel instead of the master Eckernförder SV for participation in the final round of the North German championship ensured the intervention of the British military authorities after a the suspension was disregarded. The association was dissolved, neither Holstein Kiel nor the Eckernförder SV got permission to participate.

Lower Saxony (including Bremen)
In large parts of the later state of Lower Saxony (from the end of 1946) there was no regular game operation at all. Only in the south of the country was there a larger league with the (also) so-called Oberliga Süd-Niedersachsen , which roughly corresponded in size to the former Gauliga Südhannover-Braunschweig introduced in 1942 , alongside - as far as known - only the city championships of Bremen and Osnabrück as well as the Lüneburg district championship. The state of Bremen initially belonged to the American zone of occupation, but took part in the competitions of the British zone of occupation.

Finals
How difficult it was to deal with the British occupation authorities is shown by the attempt by the North German clubs to host a North German championship: It was stopped by the British military government during the quarter-finals because championship games were only permitted at district level, according to the wording: district level, and therefore had to be canceled. The Kiel clubs were banned anyway. It is not known why TuS Haste did not participate.

Westphalia
The founding of the Landesliga Westfalen was decided in September 1945 initially under the name 1st Division West as the sporting successor to the Gauliga Westfalen . In the first season, which began in February 1946 and was played in two geographically separate seasons West and East, the 18 teams that played in the Gauliga from 1939 to 1944 took part in the game. The group winners of the first season were FC Schalke 04 and SpVgg Erkenschwick. However, there was no final for the Westphalia Championship between the two group winners because the British military government prohibited the game.

As was customary at the time, due to the equality of points, there was a playoff between Düren and Troisdorf, which ended 2: 2 n.V. and was not repeated, so that Düren 99 became champions due to the better goal difference

1946/47
In the 1946/47 season, regular league operations across the board took place for the first time in the British occupation zone. The best teams of the respective districts were divided directly into the district leagues. Qualification via upstream city or district championships was no longer necessary. Following the district championships, the district champions determine a total of six national champions in the British zone of occupation. The national champions and the respective runners-up continued to take part in the final round of the British zone championship.
National champions were 1946/47:
In north Germany:
- VfB Lübeck (Schleswig-Holstein)
- FC St. Pauli (Hamburg)
- Werder Bremen (Lower Saxony / Bremen)
In West Germany:
- Borussia Dortmund (Westphalia)
- Rot-Weiß Oberhausen (Lower Rhine)
- VfR Cologne 04 rrh. (Middle Rhine)

Schleswig-Holstein
In Schleswig-Holstein in 1946/47 there was a state championship with 20 clubs that had previously qualified for the competition in the district championship leagues. The state championship was initially held in several rounds in the knockout system . The last four participants remaining in the competition then determined the national champion in a group round. VfB Lübeck became national champion. In addition, Holstein Kiel qualified, at the time in second place, for the final round for the championship of the British zone and then - when the runner-up was finally won - for the newly created Oberliga Nord.

In Lower Saxony, in addition to the southern group of the Oberliga, which had already been played the previous year, a northern group was also played in the 1946/47 season. The two group winners then determined the champions Werder Bremen.

Oberliga Niedersachsen-Süd Champion of the Oberliga Niedersachsen Süd was again last year's winner TSV Braunschweig. After the end of the season, Hannover 96 successfully protested against individual game ratings and was therefore subsequently grouped into the new Oberliga Nord instead of the initially qualified team from Linden 07. Due to ambiguities in the promotion and relegation regulation, SV Rot-Weiß Braunschweig and Hannoversche SC played in 1983 without a rating.

West Germany
Westphalia
The Landesliga Westfalen was again held in two geographically separate groups, West and East. Unlike last year, however, a final of the two group winners was then played. Borussia Dortmund became the first Westphalian champion after the Second World War with a 3-2 victory over FC Schalke 04. This qualified BVB for the final round, while Schalke had to take the detour via the second round (Westphalia, Lower Rhine, Middle Rhine).

1947/48
In the British occupation zone, the upper leagues West and North were introduced as the highest division across the board. Below the two upper leagues, regional leagues (in northern Germany sometimes also referred to as amateur leagues ) were installed as the second division level. District championships, however, were no longer played, in their place came the state championships, which were played among the respective winners of the state leagues and regularly entitled to participate in the promotion round to the upper league.
The final round of the British Zone Championship, played for the last time in 1947/48, was played with eight participants in the knockout system. Qualified for the final round were the four best teams of the two upper leagues, north and west.
Last year's winner Hamburger SV was again the champion of the British zone of occupation. The team was able to prevail in the final 6-1 against FC St. Pauli. Both finalists also qualified as representatives of the British occupation zone for the final round of the German championship .
