Werder Hanover (officially: Ballspielverein "Werder" from 1910 eV Hanover ) is a sports club from Hanover -Vinnhorst. The first soccer team played in the highest amateur league in Lower Saxony between 1950 and 1956.

history

In 1909, some middle-class students founded the SV Welf Hannover , the name of which was derived from the noble family of the Guelphs . A year later it became today's BV Werder Hannover . With the renaming one wanted to recognize the achievements of the Werder Bremen association , at the same time the name should remember the Prussian general Hans Wilhelm von Werder , who had made a name for himself in the Franco-German war .

In 1922 Werder rose to the then first-class Südkreisliga and reached positions in the midfield. Because of their offensive style of play, the team was often referred to as the "black hussars ". In 1928 the team reached its peak with third place. A year later, the club had to leave its home on Callinstrasse, whereupon the club led merger negotiations with Rot-Weiß and Eintracht Hannover , both of which failed.

In 1947 Werder was one of the founding members of the Hanover State League , from which one had to relegate in the first season. In 1950, the team became champions of the amateur league 3 and then made it to the second-class amateur league Lower Saxony- West. After a strong season that ended the team in third place, Werder had to switch to the eastern season. Here the team had a harder time and in 1952 only managed to stay in the league after a 4-0 win in the decider against Rot-Weiß Braunschweig .

In the following season in 1952/53, the Duke, who had fled the GDR , took over as coach. At the start, Werder defeated the relegated league Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 and played for a top spot until spring. At the end of the season, the team slipped back to fourth place. The high level could not be maintained, so that Werder had to relegate to the amateur league in 1956. From this one got down three years later and played in the district class since the mid-1970s.

After being able to return to the district league in the meantime, they were relegated to the Hanover-Stadt district league in 2008 , where Werder still plays today. With Gerald Asamoah , Werder Hannover produced a German national player. In the meantime, Werder was trained by the former Polish international Roman Wójcicki .
