In his youth and as a young professional he played for Hannover 96 , then from 1999 to 2010 for FC Schalke 04 . Asamoah won the DFB Cup twice in a row with FC Schalke 04 , was in the final of the World Cup with the national team in 2002 and was German runner-up a total of four times. In 2012 he also made his first promotion to the Bundesliga with SpVgg Greuther Fürth .
The striker, who was used both on the outside lanes and in the storm center, played 323 Bundesliga games in his career and scored 50 goals. His last position as an active player was the second team of FC Schalke 04, for which he played between 2013 and 2015. On November 14, 2015, he gave his farewell game in the Veltins-Arena .

Time in Hanover
Asamoah has lived in Germany since he was twelve and attended the same school class as his former club colleague Fabian Ernst . He began his career as a footballer in 1990, shortly after his arrival, at Werder Hannover . In 1994 he moved to Hannover 96 , where he was part of the Lower Saxony third division squad from the 1996/97 season .
After Asamoah struggled with cardiovascular problems in 1998, a doctor was diagnosed with hypertrophic non-obstructive cardiomyopathy (HNCM), which is associated with a thickening of the heart septum , which put his football career at risk. Doctors advised him to end his career, but an American heart specialist was able to help him decisively so that he could continue his football career. The risk of cardiac arrest was given as one percent. The club was required to keep a defibrillator ready at the edge of the field.
FC Schalke 04
In the summer of 1999 he moved to FC Schalke 04 , with whom he won the DFB Cup in 2001 and 2002 and the League Cup in 2005 . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season, a knee injury threw him back, but he was able to fight his way back into the Schalke team. On September 28, 2006, Asamoah broke his left tibia and fibula in the UEFA Cup match of FC Schalke 04 at AS Nancy after a serious foul. After six months Asamoah celebrated his comeback in the game against VfB Stuttgart on March 17, 2007, when he came on in the 76th minute.
In the 2007/08 season he scored a hat trick against Eintracht Trier in the first round of the DFB Cup , the first of his career in the DFB Cup. In January 2008 he extended his contract with Schalke for three years until June 30, 2011.
With 63 appearances, Asamoah completed the most games in international competitions for FC Schalke 04, scoring eight goals.
FC St. Pauli
On June 1, 2010 Asamoah's move to newly promoted FC St. Pauli was announced. At the same time, a return of the player to FC Schalke after the expiry of his two-year loan contract in Hamburg was contractually agreed. Shortly before the start of the 2010/11 season, Asamoah suffered a partial torn tendon in his thigh at a blitz tournament in Göttingen . He did not play his first competitive game for his new club until September 19, 2010 in the local derby against Hamburger SV . He succeeded in submitting a goal. In the away game at Hamburger SV on February 16, 2011, his header hit to the 1-0 final score for the first victory in the city derby of FC St. Pauli since 1977 and made himself a fan favorite.
After St. Pauli was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , Asamoah should have returned to Schalke, but his contract was terminated at the end of June 2011. From July 2011, Asamoah trained under Olaf Thon at VfB Hüls to keep fit. A performance in the fifth class NRW league was not part of the agreement.
Greuther Fuerth
In January 2012, SpVgg Greuther Fürth signed him . On his mandatory league debut on February 12, 2012 against SC Paderborn , Asamoah was able to contribute two goals to the 5-1 final score. At the end of the season, SpVgg was promoted to the Bundesliga with Gerald Asamoah. Although Asamoah was often only allowed to sit on the bench in the second division at Fürth, he was a regular in the first half of the 2012/13 Bundesliga season . The contract with Middle Franconia, which expired on June 30, 2013, was not extended.
Back to Schalke
In the summer of 2013 he returned to FC Schalke 04 to strengthen the second team there and to work in the PR area. He scored his first goal of the season on August 10, 2013 in a 4-0 home win against SSVg Velbert . Due to a few failures, he was once again included in the first team's squad in the second round of the DFB Cup and came on as a substitute in stoppage time on 25 September 2013 in the game against SV Darmstadt 98 . He played his 379th competitive game for the club's first team. On February 2, 2015, Asamoah announced his retirement on June 30, 2015. Asamoah played his last game as an active soccer player on May 23, 2015 in a 2-1 home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach II . On November 14, 2015, a farewell game was held in his honor in the Veltins Arena with over 60,000 spectators.
National team
After his naturalization in 2001, Gerald Asamoah was the first native African to be selected for a DFB selection. In his first game for the German national team , he scored a goal on May 29, 2001 in a friendly against Slovakia . At the Soccer World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002 , he was used in the final , among other things . At the 2006 World Cup , he was also in the German squad, played in the preliminary round match against Ecuador and worked in the dressing room as a DJ , which he contributed to the team's motivation. On November 4, 2011, five years after his last international match, he announced - with an ironic statement in an interview - his resignation from the national team.
After the active time
On July 1, 2015, FC Schalke 04 announced that Asamoah would be the assistant coach of the U-15 team. In addition to this activity, he also acts as a club ambassador. In October he acquired the A trainer license .
On November 29, 2016, it became known that Asamoah changed position within FC Schalke 04 and will now be the manager of the U23.
Life
Christian and social engagement
Gerald Asamoah is devout Christian and told in works such as the Football Bible by David Kadel of his faith and its relevance for everyday life. He also appeared in Kadel's soccer documentary Fußball Gott (2002) and appears as a gospel singer.
In 2007 he founded the “Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease” in Hanover. The long-term goal is to set up a children's heart center in the Ghanaian capital Accra . Asamoah also supports the ora international and World Vision relief organizations . He also acts as a UNESCO ambassador for the “Education for Children in Need” program.
Since March 2013 he has been the sponsor for the Ohm-Gymnasium Erlangen in the project School without Racism - School with Courage .
On May 12, 2014, Gerald Asamoah became a school sponsor for the Rosa-Parks-Schule, comprehensive school of the city of Herten, in the Germany-wide "School without Racism - School with Courage" network.
Asamoah is a long-time member and former representative of the players' council of the Association of Contract Soccer Players (VdV).
Victim of disparaging remarks
In 1997 supporters of Energie Cottbus shouted racist insults to Gerald Asamoah and Otto Addo in a relegation game against Hannover 96 and threw bananas at them.
In 2005 Gerald Asamoah supported the media campaign You are Germany , which the initiators wanted to encourage German citizens to become more self-confident and motivated. On the occasion of the soccer world championship in 2006 he was denigrated by the right-wing extremist association Schutzbund Deutschland from Pritzwalk with a poster that read: “No, Gerald, you are not Germany. You are FRG! ” The Neuruppin District Court saw no incitement to hatred . However, the lawyers were of the opinion that the offense of insult could have been fulfilled.
In the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 on August 18, 2007, Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller insulted the striker. He is said to have called Asamoah a "black pig". Weidenfeller admitted an insult, but denied having made any racist comments. Rather, he insulted Asamoah as a "gay pig". The court could not determine which words had actually been said on the field, the DFB sentenced Weidenfeller "for a degrading and denigrating statement" according to § 9 of the legal and procedural rules of the DFB to a ban of three games and an additional fine of 10,000 euros. The paragraph regulates discrimination "in relation to race, skin color, language, religion or origin" and its punishment.
Private life
Asamoah is married to his Ghanaian cousin. He is the father of dizygoti twins (daughter and son) and one daughter.
