DFB Cup 2000/01

The 2002 DFB Cup winner was FC Schalke 04 . In the final at the Olympiastadion Berlin on May 11, 2002, Schalkedefended the titlewith a 4-2 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Bayer Leverkusen missed the German championship and possible victories in the DFB Cup final and the UEFA Champions League finalagainst Real Madrid 2-1 in Glasgow within a few weeks this season. The Leverkusen national players Ballack, Butt, Ramelow, Schneider and Neuville also missed victory in the World Cup final.

As Schalke, as cup winners and fifth in the championship, qualified twice for the UEFA Cup , Werder Bremen moved up as the third German participant in the UEFA Cup. In the 2002/03 UEFA Cup , Schalke lost to Polish Cup winners Wisła Krakau in the third round , while Leverkusen reached the second group stage of the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League .
