Yıldıray Baştürk [ jɯldɯraj baʃtyrk ] (born December 24, 1978 in Herne ) is a former German - Turkish soccer player.

Career

society

The son of a miner began his football career with Sportfreunde Wanne-Eickel . As a youth, Baştürk played for SG Wattenscheid 09 , but he made his breakthrough through promotion to the Bundesliga with VfL Bochum , with whom he also played in the UEFA Cup . By moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen , he was finally able to prevail. In 2002 he was the first Turkish footballer to reach the Champions League final with Bayer Leverkusen , was runner-up in the Bundesliga, made it to the cup final and was third with the Turkish national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea .

In July 2004 he moved to Hertha BSC . He was one of the regulars there and was elected Herthaner for the 2005/06 season. For the 2007/08 season he moved to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer and signed a three-year contract with an option to extend.

On January 27, 2010, Baştürk moved to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer . At his new club, however, he had only come to a single use in the Premier League on April 24, 2010 in the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers before the contract expired at the end of the 2009/10 season and was not renewed. The following year he was without a club and ended his career in May 2011.

National team

Baştürk's family immigrated to Germany from Bartın in northwest Turkey. He has both Turkish and German citizenship and decided to play for the Turkish national team. The highlight of his career in the national team was when Turkey finished third at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . As the top performer of the Champions League finalist Bayer Leverkusen, Baştürk was one of the regular players in his country and played in every game. In 2003 he reached the semi-finals of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup with Turkey and came third again. The coach of the Turkish national team at the time, Fatih Terim , did not nominate Baştürk for the 2008 European Championship . Baştürk then decided not to play for the Turkish national team as long as they were coached by Terim. Even after Terim's resignation, he was no longer called up to the national team. He made his last game for the national team in early 2008.

After the career

Since 2014, Baştürk has been one of three managing directors of a real estate company in Bochum.
