Bartın ( Greek Μπαρτίν Mpartin , ancient Greek Παρθένιος Parthenios ) is a Turkish city and district in the Black Sea region . Bartın is the capital of the Bartın Province of the same name . The name Bartın (Parthénia) is of Greek origin and goes back to the Parthénios River (today: Bartın Çayı ). The city is surrounded by steep mountains to the east, west and north. The highest mountain in the area is the Keçikıran peak at 1619 meters.
The city was founded eleven kilometers southeast of the point where the Bartın Çayı flows into the Black Sea . The city goes back to ancient Parthenia in Paphlagonia . Ships with a cargo of up to 500 tons can reach the city. This makes Bartın the only inland port in Turkey. The Turkish Navy operates a base in Bartın .
Bartın County covers 47% of the provincial territory and borders on Zonguldak Province to the west . It has the highest number of inhabitants of the four districts of the province and also the highest population density. In addition to the district capital, there are two other cities ( Kozcağız with 6,987 and Hasankadı with 2,275 inhabitants) and 138 villages, seven of which have more than a thousand inhabitants.
