Lincoln , real name Cássio de Souza Soares (born January 22, 1979 in São Brás do Suaçuí , Minas Gerais ), is a former Brazilian soccer player . His position was in the central attacking midfield .

Club career

Atlético Mineiro

Lincoln was discovered as a street footballer at the age of nine. He was then trained at Atlético Mineiro's youth boarding school in Belo Horizonte . There he went through all youth stations and the junior national team before he switched to the professional boarding school at the age of 17. In 1999 and 2000 he won the national championship of Minas Gerais with the club . In 1999 he scored the winning goal in the final against América Mineiro with a penalty . In the finals of the Brazilian championship of 1999 he lost with Atlético against SC Corinthians Paulista from São Paulo.

1. FC Kaiserslautern

In 2001 he came to the Bundesliga for 1. FC Kaiserslautern . After a good first season, two years followed with injuries, bad form and misunderstandings. After differing views on the treatment of an injury, the collaboration ended in March 2004, Lincoln traveled back to Brazil and it almost seemed as if the Bundesliga chapter was over.

FC Schalke 04

At the beginning of June 2004, however, he moved to FC Schalke 04 . Here, too, the technician was initially thrown back by a muscle injury so that the start of the season was not optimal. But after the coaching change from Jupp Heynckes to Ralf Rangnick, the Brazilian blossomed and played his best season to date in the league, which was crowned with his appointment as a player in the first half of the season. With twelve goals this season and eleven assists, he was also the best scorer in the Royal Blues. In January 2005, his contract was extended to 2008.

The next two seasons were characterized by very good games in the Champions League (2005/06 season) and varied appearances in the Bundesliga. In the championship race 2006/07 Lincoln was suspended for 5 second round matches after a red card for assault. After the runner-up with Schalke, Lincoln moved to Galatasaray Istanbul .

Galatasaray Istanbul

The high level of expectation in Turkey became clear when he arrived at Istanbul Airport, when around 3,000 Galatasaray fans were waiting for the playmaker. Just three days after the start of sales, the club reported sales of 10,000 Lincoln jerseys, which no player in the club had achieved before. Of 17 games in the first half of the season, Lincoln played only 11 games and scored three goals. In the derbies against Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş he was missing. Even in the second half of the league, Lincoln only played 7 league games.

At the beginning of the preparation for the 2008/2009 season under the new coach Michael Skibbe , he was absent for the first four days and then received a record fine of € 105,000. His contract with Galatasaray was terminated in July 2009 after he failed to attend training camp again.

Return to Brazil

Lincoln moved to Palmeiras São Paulo on February 8, 2010 . After a year and a half, however, he was loaned to the league rivals and later relegated Avaí FC for half a year , as he was no longer part of the team. There he was able to convince again with his qualities and stood out with three goals and eight assists in seventeen games. After relegation, however, a commitment was out of the question.

In January 2012 he therefore moved to the first division club Coritiba FC , with whom he won the Paraná national championship in May . He also quickly became captain.

National team

After Lincoln had not been considered for the Brazilian national team for a long time, he briefly considered playing for Germany in 2005 , which was rejected by coach Jürgen Klinsmann . In May 2007 he was finally appointed by Carlos Dunga due to some refusals from other players in the provisional squad of Brazil for the Copa America 2007 . However, Lincoln did not make the leap into the final squad for the South American Championship. In the 2007/2008 season he was ready to play for the Turkish national team, but this was rejected by coach Fatih Terim .
