Career

Active career and beginnings as a trainer

After graduating from the Max-Born-Gymnasium in his home town Backnang Rangnick began in 1977 at the University of Stuttgart , a teacher training program for sports and English . At the same time, he played for the amateur team of VfB Stuttgart from 1976 after he had previously been appointed to the selection team of the Württemberg Football Association as an A-youth .

As part of a study abroad at the University of Sussex , he played in English amateur football for Southwick FC, based in West Sussex, in the 1979/80 season . After returning to Germany, he joined VfR Heilbronn , for which he played in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg . In 1982 he moved within the league to SSV Ulm 1846 . After he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with the team at the end of the season , he left the club.

Between 1983 and 1985 Rangnick worked as a player coach for Viktoria Backnang . During this time he managed to march through with the club from the district league to the association league. In 1984, he was the best of his year with a grade point average of 1.2 and obtained the soccer teacher license at the Sports University in Cologne . He had previously acquired the Trainer A license at the age of 22. In 1984 he watched the training and game of Dynamo Kiev under Valery Lobanovsky in a training camp with Viktoria Backnang. This team played with a back four and pressing the most modern football tactics at the time .

From 1985 Rangnick worked for two years as a coach for the amateur team at VfB Stuttgart. At the same time, he passed his first state examination at the University of Stuttgart in 1986. For the season 1987/88 he returned to the field as a player- coach for the district division TSV Lippoldsweiler . He worked full-time for the Stuttgart company fee Sprachreisen as head of the high school and college programs department until 1992 . In addition, he was involved as a coach in Baden-Württemberg amateur football at SC Korb and from 1990 in the youth team at VfB Stuttgart. In 1992 he gave up his job in favor of a job with the Swabian Bundesliga club, who signed him up as a sports coordinator with the supervision of youth and amateur football.

In summer 1994 Rangnick VfB Stuttgart left after the desired role as assistant coach of Jürgen Röber in the first team in the Bundesliga did not get. He signed a contract with his former playing station, the then regional league team SSV Ulm 1846, but was unable to take up the position of coach due to illness. From 1994 Rangnick ran a rehabilitation center in Böblingen .

SSV Reutlingen 05

In the summer of 1995 Rangnick took over the training at SSV Reutlingen 05, which was competing in the Regionalliga Süd . Previously, in the 1994/95 season , the club narrowly escaped relegation; Rangnick now led the team around Michael Mayer , Thomas Winter , Kristijan Đorđević and Joachim Cast to fourth place in the table. Participation in the amateur championship was just missed with two points behind SSV Ulm. Also in the following season 1995/96 the club showed good performances and stayed in the front third of the league. Rangnick fell out over the next few months with the sporting management and ended his engagement at the end of the first half of the season in December 1996. He moved within the league to SSV Ulm 1846.

SSV Ulm 1846

SSV Ulm 1846 had played for a return to the 2nd Bundesliga in previous years. In the 1996/97 season , the team trained by long-time youth coach Martin Gröh was well behind the top duo 1. FC Nürnberg and SpVgg Greuther Fürth, which dominated the league . After his arrival, the new trainer Rangnick played his preferred ball-oriented game system with a four-man defensive chain. After initial difficulties in the first season - the club finished the season with 50 goals conceded, 31 of which the team received in the second half of the season under Rangnick's direction - the team fought a duel with Kickers Offenbach in the following season for the regional league championship and the associated direct Promotion to the second class. SSV Ulm finished the season in first place with a one-point lead. In addition, Rangnick won his first title with the club when the VfL Kirchheim / Teck was defeated in the final of the WFV Cup .

Acted as a relegation candidate at the beginning of the season, SSV Ulm immediately established itself at the top of the league in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1846 and until then remained undefeated for the longest of all teams in German professional football. Due to the success with its innovative game system, there were discussions about modern football tactics . As a result, Rangnick advanced to a much sought-after media interview partner and a sought-after coaching candidate. Due to an appearance on the ZDF show das current sportstudio on December 19, 1998, during which he explained the tactics of a game in great detail on a board, he is still referred to as a “football professor” today.

After the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart under Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelders dream coach Winfried Schäfer the success failed and Wolfgang Rolff was appointed as his successor, the Stuttgart club management agreed with Rangnick on a contract for the beginning of the 1999/2000 season during the winter break . After the announcement of the change, the Ulm team slipped back as autumn champions of the second division after a series of games without a win until March 1999 to fifth place, so that Rangnick resigned from his work as a coach.

VfB Stuttgart

The Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart had not found their way out of the bottom third of the table under the meanwhile third coach in the course of the season, Rainer Adrion . In order to avoid an impending relegation, Rangnick was hired as head coach in May 1999. The SSV Ulm rose under Rangnicks successor Martin Andermatt at the end of the season in the first Bundesliga. Rangnick reached eleventh place in the table with Stuttgart at the end of the season. In the following year, under the new Stuttgart President Manfred Haas , the association embarked on an economic consolidation process, which in particular provided for the departure of established top performers such as Frank Verlaat or Fredi Bobič . There were repeated discussions and disputes between the economic and sporting managers of the club in the club's environment. Rangnick was often accused of eagerly wanting to impose his ideas on the club. In particular, the suspension of the player Krassimir Balakow in autumn 2000 brought him criticism. After the team achieved positive results by reaching an eighth place in the table in the 1999/2000 season and the subsequent qualification for the UEFA Cup via the UI Cup , they were again in the area of relegation ranks in the following season. After leaving the UEFA Cup in February 2001 against the Spanish side Celta Vigo , the Stuttgart club's management previously pledged sports director decided for the short time Rolf Rüssmann , Rangnick exempt from his duties and Felix Magath to replace.

Hannover 96

In the summer of 2001 Rangnick took over the then second division Hannover 96 , who had not been promoted to the Bundesliga since his success in the DFB club cup in 1991/92 and who had employed 13 different coaches. Rangnick changed the game system, then the team dominated the second division season 2001/02 . In particular, the offensive around Daniel Stendel , Jiří Kaufman , Jan Šimák and Nebojša Krupniković was a successful part of the team, they scored 93 goals for the Lower Saxony club this season. The team was promoted to the Bundesliga with a ten-point advantage over runner-up Arminia Bielefeld .

In the highest German league, the team supervised by Rangnick played against relegation and was on a relegation zone for a long time. Previously, the important midfielder Šimák had left the club. Nevertheless, the club relied on a long-term cooperation with Rangnick and extended his contract early in September 2002 to summer 2005. After some additional commitments during the winter break, the club left the relegation ranks on matchday 20 and reached eleventh place in the table at the end of the 2002/03 season . In the period that followed, Rangnick clashed again and again with President Martin Kind and sports director Ricardo Moar . At the end of 2003, a release clause in favor of Rangnicks from his coaching contract was published. Then there was speculation about a possible change of Rangnick to Hertha BSC . In March 2004 Rangnick was given a leave of absence after four points from the first six second round matches.

In summer 2004 the new national coach Jürgen Klinsmann was looking for an assistant and asked u. a. at Ralf Rangnick. This refused, but Joachim Löw was committed.

FC Schalke 04

In September 2004 Rangnick succeeded Jupp Heynckes at FC Schalke 04 and led the team to the top of the table in the first half of the season, level on points with FC Bayern Munich . On the 25th matchday, Schalke defeated the team from Munich and took the lead. Of the following five games, Schalke lost four times, so that Bayern Munich won the championship.

The first half of the 2005/06 season was unsatisfactory, although Schalke achieved solid results in the league. In the cup, Schalke lost 6-0 in Frankfurt and also retired early in the Champions League . In the weeks before the winter break, there were media reports that the club's board was planning to part with Rangnick during the winter break; Rangnick, for his part, had announced a separation at the end of the season. As a reaction to the home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on December 10th there were loud expressions of displeasure by the audience against the board and the team as well as expressions of solidarity with Rangnick, who then ran a spontaneous lap of honor through the stadium. Rangnick called this a mistake in retrospect. He could understand that the board and some players interpreted this as a provocation; However, it was an "exceptional emotional situation". Rangnick was given leave of absence two days later.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

Rangnick at Hoffenheim in the Regionalliga (2007)

On June 22, 2006, Rangnicks was announced as head coach of the third-class TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ( Regionalliga Süd ), sponsored by patron Dietmar Hopp , for the 2006/2007 season. After a weak start with two defeats in the first four competitive games, the club rose to the second division on May 5, 2007 after a 4-0 win over Sportfreunde . Within a year the march into the Bundesliga succeeded . In the following years, this rapid development of the club was attributed not only to the considerable investments in player transfers but also to Rangnick's sporting management. a. has been called the architect of success.

In the first Bundesliga year, the team trained by Rangnick won the unofficial autumn championship (first place in the table at the end of the first half of the season), in the second half of the season they no longer played as successfully and ended the season in seventh place. After an eleventh place in the second Bundesliga season, the early extension of Rangnick's contract until 2012 was announced on May 13, 2010. After Hoffenheim had finished the first half of the 2010/2011 season in eighth place, Rangnick resigned as TSG coach on New Year's Day 2011. According to media reports, the main reason for this was differences of opinion with Dietmar Hopp. The relationship between the two had not been free of tension in previous years. Shortly before the contract was terminated, the immediate change of the Hoffenheim player Luiz Gustavo to Bayern Munich became known. Rangnick had vehemently opposed a sale of the Brazilian midfielder. Rangnick's successor was his previous assistant Marco Pezzaiuoli .

FC Schalke 04

Ralf Rangnick at Schalke 04 (2011)

Three months after terminating his contract with Hoffenheim, Rangnick was introduced as head coach at Schalke 04 on March 21, 2011. He thus succeeded Felix Magath , who had previously been the coach and manager of FC Schalke 04. After the team around Raúl , Klaas-Jan Huntelaar , Jefferson Farfán and Manuel Neuer had reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League under Magath's leadership, they beat the reigning champions Inter Milan 5: 2 there and now under Rangnick and 2: 1. The club lost the semi-finals to Manchester United . Reaching the semi-finals was the club's greatest success in this competition to date. Rangnick and his players won the final of the DFB-Pokal under Magath 5-0 against MSV Duisburg , this was Rangnick's first national title. This success enabled Schalke to play in the UEFA Cup the following season, although the 14th place in the table was occupied at the end of the Bundesliga season 2010/11 .

On September 22, 2011, Rangnick terminated his contract with immediate effect due to a burnout syndrome ("vegetative exhaustion syndrome").

Across all competitions, he won 1.82 points per game in his two terms of office (88 games) at Schalke, which no other former coach has achieved with at least a comparatively long term at FC Schalke 04 since the start of the Bundesliga. Third place in this ranking is taken by his former assistant coach Mirko Slomka (1.79 points per game).

Activities at RB Leipzig (2012 to 2019)

Sports director Rangnick at a Red Bull Salzburg youth tournament

At the end of June 2012, Ralf Rangnick was introduced as the new sports director of FC Red Bull Salzburg after a 10-month break . He was also responsible for the development of RB Leipzig . At the start of his career, he put RB Leipzig's trainer Peter Pacult on leave and replaced him with Alexander Zorniger . Roger Schmidt was hired as head coach in Salzburg, a position previously held by Ricardo Moniz . Shortly thereafter, Salzburg failed against the Luxembourg club FC Dudelange in the Champions League qualification, which was rated in the media as one of the most embarrassing events in Austrian football. Rangnick then rebuilt the squad, young players like Kevin Kampl , Sadio Mané and Valon Berisha were signed. The team finished the season under sports director Rangnick in second place.

The 2013/14 season was successful, with the club having been crowned champions eight rounds before the end of the season. With 106 goals after 34 rounds, the Bundesliga record of SK Rapid Wien was exceeded. In qualifying for the Champions League, the team narrowly failed to Fenerbahçe Istanbul , in the subsequent Europa League group stage they won all six games and were group winners. In the round of 16, Salzburg defeated the Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam in both games (3-0, 3-1). In the round of 16 they lost to FC Basel after a 0-0 draw in the first game with 1-2 in the second leg.

At the same time, the Leipzig team, meanwhile under coach Zorniger, managed to move up twice in a row in Germany, from the fourth-class Regionalliga Nordost 2014 to the 2nd Bundesliga. While the Leipzig club achieved an unexpectedly quick rise to professional football and established itself in the first division in the following years, Salzburg were less successful. B. there were repeated failures in qualifying for the Champions League. As a result, Rangnick focused more on the location in Leipzig among the clubs designated by Red Bull . In February 2015, Leipzig was playing its first season in the 2nd division, Rangnick announced that he would take over the coaching position of the Leipzig team after the end of the season and resign from his duties in Salzburg. Then the Leipzig coach Zorniger resigned prematurely, until the end of the season the U-17 coach Achim Beierlorzer took over the first team.

As announced, Rangnick worked as head coach in Leipzig for the 2015/16 season , Beierlorzer acted as his assistant coach. He was succeeded in Salzburg by managing director Jochen Sauer and sports coordinator Christoph Freund . Under Rangnick, RB Leipzig rose to the Bundesliga . For the 2016/17 season , the club signed Ralph Hasenhüttl as head coach and Rangnick fully concentrated on his position as sports director. After the club separated from Hasenhüttl after the 2017/18 season and signed Julian Nagelsmann as the new coach from July 2019, Rangnick took over the position of head coach for the 2018/19 season . Under Rangnick, RB Leipzig qualified third for the Champions League and reached the final of the DFB Cup , in which they were defeated by FC Bayern Munich .

Sports manager at Red Bull (2019 to 2020)

Rangnick left RB Leipzig on July 1, 2019 and became Head of Sport and Development Soccer at Red Bull GmbH in Fuschl am See . In this position, he was mainly responsible for the New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Bragantino , but was also a consultant for RB Leipzig. On July 31, 2020, the contract that was valid until June 30, 2021 was terminated.
