He played his first game for the Swabian licensed team on October 2, 1991 when he came on as a substitute for Manfred Kastl in the 74th minute of the second leg of the first round of the UEFA Cup at Hungarian Pécsi Mecsek FC . Just a minute later, he achieved the interim 2-1 lead for VfB, who moved into the second round after the 2-2 final in the second leg and the 4-1 first leg success. Three days later Michael Mayer played after his substitution in the half-time break in the 1: 2 against Eintracht Frankfurtfor the first time in the Bundesliga. In the rest of the season, at the end of which VfB Stuttgart won its fourth German championship, Mayer was no longer in the professional squad.

In the summer of 1992 he moved back to his hometown club playing in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg . With SSV Reutlingen he qualified in 1994 for the newly created Regionalliga Süd . In the 1996/97 season he and Olivier Djappa finished second in the top scorer list behind Frank Türr with 24 goals scored . In 2000 he was with SSV Reutlingen under Armin Veh champion of the Regionalliga Süd, which meant promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. After that season, he first ended his career before he became active again for TuS Metzingen in September 2002 . After four years he switched to TSG Young Boys Reutlingen, where he let his career end in the summer of 2007.
