Provost Heinrich Ferdinand von der Leyen

Heinrich Ferdinand von der Leyen (* probably 1639 in Cologne ; † March 8, 1714 in Mainz ) was a Catholic clergyman. Most recently he was provost of the cathedral in Mainz and choir bishop in Trier and also served as envoy.

Life

He was the son of Lothar Ferdinand von der Leyen and Maria Sophia Brömser von Rüdesheim. He attended schools in Cologne and Trier . Von der Leyen entered the clergy. From 1653 he was domicellar in the cathedral chapter in Trier and from 1679 archdeacon in Karden on the Moselle , which gave him the honorary title of Trier choir bishop. Later he also became provost of the cathedral in Mainz. In 1705 he refused to be elected bishop of Eichstätt , where he also held a canon position, for reasons of age.

Due to his worldly skills, he served various gentlemen as a diplomat. In this capacity he was also authorized representative of the Archbishop of Trier Johann Hugo von Orsbeck in Vienna in 1677 and in 1689 companion of the elector in the election of Joseph I as Roman-German king in Augsburg .

Heinrich Ferdinand von der Leyen donated the silver-plated Arnulfus statue to his home community Nickenich , which is still in the current church today.

He was buried in an elaborate tomb in Mainz Cathedral . The 8.33 m high epitaph was created by Johann Mauritz Gröninger .
