Manfred Haas (born July 27, 1940 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a former German manager and football functional . Haas was Chairman of the Board of Management of Sparkassen-Versicherung and from 2000 to 2003 President of the Bundesliga soccer club VfB Stuttgart , where he had previously been Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board since 1993.

Career

Professional career

Haas completed an apprenticeship as a banker, which he successfully completed in 1958. He finished his subsequent studies in 1962 with a diploma in business administration, and in the following year he switched to the Württemberg Savings Banks and Giro Association . After becoming the association's youngest manager at the age of 35 in 1975, he left the organization in 1989 to focus on savings bank insurance.

From October 1, 1989, Haas was on the board of the Sparkassen-Versicherung Allgemeine Versicherung AG and Sparkassen-Versicherung Lebensversicherung AG in Stuttgart. In 1991 he rose to the position of Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Sparkassen-Versicherung before he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management three years later. From 1993 he was also a member of the board of directors of SV Holding AG , which was founded in preparation for the merger of Sparkassen-Versicherung , ÖVA Versicherungen and Gebäudeversicherung Baden-Württemberg AG . Here, too, he was soon promoted to deputy chairman. When the personal union of the executive boards was introduced in April 1997, Haas also became a member of the executive boards of all other group companies and, after the merger, from January 1, 2000, became CEO of the resulting SV Versicherungen AG . Under his leadership, the merger of the group with SV SparkassenVersicherungen Hessen-Nassau-Thüringen was initiated, which took place after his departure in January 2004.

In parallel to his board activities, Haas worked in individual interest groups such as the Association of Public Insurers and the General Association of the German Insurance Industry .

Football official at VfB Stuttgart

In 1993, Heinz Bandke , who, like Haas, worked for Sparkassen-Versicherung and was then Chairman of the Supervisory Board of VfB Stuttgart , won Manfred Haas for the office of his deputy at VfB and a commitment from Sparkassen-Versicherung as a sponsor of the association. After seven years on the club's supervisory board, Haas took over the presidency of VfB Stuttgart on October 30, 2000 from Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder , who had announced his move to the top of the DFB , in a phase in the club's history that was classified as relatively difficult. The club was relatively heavily in debt and was in danger of relegation. Avoiding this was the primary goal. Manfred Haas consequently reduced his expenses and VfB was forced to use players from its own youth. This ultimately turned out to be more successful than imagined. VfB managed to qualify directly for the Champions League in 2003 . In the course of a bet, he then had Ioan Viorel Ganea remove his mustache. On June 26, 2003 Manfred Haas handed over the presidency to Erwin Staudt .
