Trainer
Rolff began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the 1996/97 season at Hamburger SV . He had his first post as head coach in the 1997/98 season at the second division club SV Meppen , but could not prevent its relegation to the regional league. After only one season he was again assistant coach, this time at VfB Stuttgart , where he also worked briefly as an interim coach. In November 2000 he took up another position as assistant coach, this time at Bayer 04 Leverkusen , before taking over the Kuwaiti national team for the 2001/02 season . He worked there until October 2002.
On July 1, 2004, Wolfgang Rolff became assistant coach at Werder Bremen . After the club separated from its head coach Thomas Schaaf on May 15, 2013 , Rolff took over as interim coach together with Matthias Hönerbach for the last remaining game of the season, the management of the Bundesliga team. On May 24, 2013, Bremen also announced the separation of Rolff, Hönerbach and goalkeeping coach Michael Kraft .
From February 1 to June 30, 2014 he was assistant coach of the Azerbaijani national team. In the 2014/15 season Rolff was assistant coach at Eintracht Frankfurt under head coach Thomas Schaaf. From August 2015 he was head coach in the Kuwaiti Premier League at al Salmiya Club .

In April 2016, Wolfgang Rolff - along with head coach Schaaf and assistant coach Hönerbach - was given leave of absence after around four months due to continued unsuccessfulness.
