Club history

The association was founded in 1956 under the name Shandong Provincial Team . From 1973 to 1989 the club played continuously in the top division. Relegation to the second division was followed by relegation to the third Chinese division in 1990. The following year, the club rose immediately to play in the first division again from 1994. After a 5th place in the first division, the first title in the club's history followed in 1995: In the Chinese association cup, the Chinese FA Cup, Shandong won 2-0 against Shanghai Shenhua. In 1996 the final of the cup was reached again, which was lost.

In 1999 Slobodan Santrač became the coach of the club, which in its first year - after having finished mostly in mid-table in the previous years - won the championship and the cup. Despite the success, Santrač was fired in 2000. His successors had only moderate success. At the end of the 2003 season, the team achieved 12th place, their worst position since their promotion. In 2004 Ljubiša Tumbaković took over the position of coach. Under his direction, the club won two further championships and twice the association cup. From 2005 to 2007 they won the group stage of the AFC Champions League 10 times in a row.
