Nii Odartey Lamptey (born December 10, 1974 in Tema ) is a former Ghanaian football player .

Career

In 1991 Lamptey was part of the Ghanaian team that became U17 world champions in Italy . At this tournament he was one of the top scorer and was also honored as the best player with the Golden Ball.

At the age of 16, Lamptey played as a professional at RSC Anderlecht in Belgium and was considered one of the greatest talents in football history. However, due to a consultancy addiction, he often changed clubs, first to Aston Villa , and played across Europe, but never quite lived up to expectations and was already at the end of his career in his mid-20s. For the most part, the failures can be blamed on greedy counselors and mental health problems after the death of his children. He also played in Argentina , at SpVgg Greuther Fürth and in China . In 2005 he signed a contract with Asante Kotoko . In the same year he founded a school for 240 children. In March 2007 he moved again, this time to the South African Premier League club Jomo Cosmos .

His younger brother Nathaniel Lamptey played for Karlsruher SC and was a participant in the U-17 World Cup in New Zealand in 1999 .
