The club was founded in 1954 as the Guangzhou Football Team . In its history, the club went through various name changes. After being taken over by the Apollo Group in 1993, the association became the first professional in China. After the Pharmaceutical Company took over the association in 2006, it was called Guangzhou Pharmaceutical FC , but was mostly referred to as the Guangzhou GPC in popular parlance and the media . For the 2010 season the club after the takeover by the was Evergrande Real Estate Group in Guangzhou Evergrande renamed.

The club was twice runner-up and reached the association cup final in 1991. In February 2010 the club was sentenced to relegation to the second division after it became known that in the promotion season 2007 wins were bought by cash payments. The club managed to get back up immediately.

In mid-2011, Guangzhou Evergrande signed Brazil's footballer of the year , the Argentine Darío Conca from the reigning Brazilian champions Fluminense FC, for three and a half years. The transfer fee is said to be $ 7 million, Chinese record, and his salary is $ 10.4 million a year, which would make him one of the highest paid players in the world. Furthermore, with Cléverson Gabriel Córdova "Cléo" and Muriqui, two Brazilians, who cost a total of 7.5 million US dollars, competed for the club. With them Evergrande became champions of the Chinese Super League for the first time in 2011 . The owner Xu Jiayin wanted to invest another $ 100 million in the club in 2012. Another well-known addition is the two-time German champion Lucas Barrios , who was signed by Borussia Dortmund on July 1, 2012 . The investments, which are considerable, especially by Chinese standards, earned the club the nickname Chelsea of Asia . In 2012, the team was not only able to defend the championship title, but also win the Chinese Cup for the first time .

In early 2013, Elkeson was bought by Botafogo FR for 5.7 million euros and signed for four years, Lucas Barrios left the club in mid-2013 and moved to Spartak Moscow . 2013 was the club's most successful season to date; they secured their third championship title in a row and won the Asian Champions League for the first time. In addition, fourth place was achieved at the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup at the end of the year . Darío Conca moved back to Fluminense for free after two and a half years. As a replacement, Alessandro Diamanti was signed by FC Bologna in early 2014 . In the middle of the year Alberto Gilardino was signed by CFC Genoa for two and a half years. The championship title was defended in 2014. After Marcello Lippi announced at the end of the season that he wanted to take a step back as a coach, Fabio Cannavaro was introduced as the new “leading” head coach, but who would share the position with Lippi. After just one year, Luiz Felipe Scolari was signed as the new coach in June 2015 .

In early 2015, Ricardo Goulart was signed by Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte for 15 million euros after Diamanti and Gilardino were loaned to Fiorentina . He signed for four years. In mid-January it was announced that Alan would be joining Guangzhou Evergrande from FC Red Bull Salzburg . Another Brazilian was signed in Paulinho in the summer transfer window . This was followed by the fifth championship title in a row and the renewed win of the AFC Champions League. At the beginning of February 2016, the Colombian Jackson Martínez was signed by Atlético Madrid for a transfer fee of 42 million euros .
