Controversy

In October 2009, the then Chinese President Hu Jintao expressed the suspicion that match-fixing was still going on in Chinese football. In the following two months, Yang Xu, former manager of Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals , and Xu Hongbo, former manager of Chengdu Blades , were arrested. Yang allegedly manipulated games in favor of Guangzhou in August and September 2006. A year later in September 2007, Xu is said to have committed the same offense in favor of Chengdu. Since the general secretary of the Chinese Football Association Nan Yong was also involved in the scandal, he had to resign in January 2010 and was replaced by Wei Di. He finally announced on February 23, 2010 that Chengdu and Guangzhou would be transferred to the second division with immediate effect. As a result, Hangzhou Greentown and Chongqing Lifan were subsequently able to stay at the green table.
