The clubs played a double round tournament , which resulted in a total of 30 games per team. The game was played according to the 3-point rule (three points per win, one point per tie). The table was determined according to the following criteria:

  2. Number of points scored in direct comparison
  3. Goal difference in direct comparison
  4. Number of goals in direct comparison
  5. Goal difference from all games
  6. Number of goals in all games

At the end of the season, the team with the highest points qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2018 . The second and third placed started in the play-off round of the Champions League. In addition, the winner of the Chinese Football Cup took part in the group stage. The two clubs with the fewest points were relegated to the second-rate China League One .

Attendees

As champion of China League One 2016, Tianjin Quanjian made it to the Chinese Super League for the first time in his club's history. The second newcomer, Guizhou Zhicheng , has never played in the top Chinese league either.

The two promoted teams replaced the last two clubs in the 2016 season , Hangzhou Greentown and Shijiazhuang Ever Bright . Shijiazhuang Ever Bright had to return to China League One after two years in the Chinese Super League. For Hangzhou Greentown, relegation meant the end of his ten-year membership in the Chinese upper house of football.
