As champion of China League One 2016, Tianjin Quanjian made it to the Chinese Super League for the first time in his club's history. The second newcomer, Guizhou Zhicheng , has never played in the top Chinese league either.
The two promoted teams replaced the last two clubs in the 2016 season , Hangzhou Greentown and Shijiazhuang Ever Bright . Shijiazhuang Ever Bright had to return to China League One after two years in the Chinese Super League. For Hangzhou Greentown, relegation meant the end of his ten-year membership in the Chinese upper house of football.
