Gregorio Manzano Ballesteros (born August 5, 1956 in Bailén ) is a Spanish football coach .

Coaching career

Beginnings

Gregorio Manzano, who was born in Bailén , trained numerous lower-class teams from the Segunda División B , Tercera División and the Liga Regional (5th Spanish League) until his engagement with Real Valladolid in 1999 .

As a first division coach

When Gregorio Manzano took over the coaching position at the first division club Real Valladolid , he first attracted nationwide interest. In the 1999/2000 season he reached eighth place in the table as a league newcomer. Despite this success, he left the club to join Racing Santander . In the Cantabrians, however, it was anything but good and so was relegation to the Segunda División at the end of the season . This did not harm his popularity and so he moved to league rivals Rayo Vallecano in the following season . With the Madrid suburb he reached a respectable midfield position.

First successes

At the beginning of the 2002/03 season, Manzano decided on the offer of the relegation-threatened RCD Mallorca . High expectations were placed on him by the ambitious first division club, which he was able to meet. Not only did he and his team almost reach 6th place at the end of the season, which would have meant participation in the UEFA Cup anyway , but a 3-0 victory against Recreativo Huelva in the cup final and this meant next to the first title in Manzanos Coaching career also means direct qualification for international business.

Atlético Madrid , who wanted to play an important role in the league and internationally with all their might, then signed Manzano. After a great season it was again not enough for international business for the "Rojiblancos", if only unfortunate because of the lost direct comparison with Sevilla FC , so that Manzano had to leave the club prematurely.

Relegation and return to Mallorca

For the 2004/2005 season, FC Málaga signed the coach who had been dismissed from Atlético, which paid off with a good midfield position in the league. After Héctor Cúper's dismissal from Manzano's former club RCD Mallorca , he returned to his old place of work in February 2006. There he managed to make the Mallorcans an integral part of the Primera División. In January 2008, those responsible for the association were rewarded, who extended his contract until June 2010.

On May 20, 2010 it was announced that Manzano would leave the club for financial reasons.

New start at Sevilla FC

Since September 27, 2010 he has been the head coach of Sevilla FC. He took over for Antonio Álvarez , who was fired because of the bad start to the season. He led the Andalusians in fifth place this season, which entitles them to participate in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League . After this season he returned to Atlético Madrid as a coach , where he replaced Quique Sánchez Flores . However, he only stayed for almost half a year; on December 21, 2011 he was on leave after leaving the Copa del Rey 2011/12 with two defeats against the second division Albacete Balompié .

Third term at RCD Mallorca

At the beginning of February 2013 Manzano returned to RCD Mallorca for the third time, taking over from Joaquín Caparrós . He initially signed a contract until the end of the season, but had an option for another season.

China

From February 2014, he coached the Chinese first division team Beijing Guoan for about a year . From 2015 to 2016 he was a coach at Shanghai Shenhua .

On April 30, 2017, Manzano succeeded Li Bing as coach of the Chinese first division team Guizhou Hengfeng .
