Real Valladolid (officially: Real Valladolid Club de Fútbol, SAD ) is a Spanish football club based in Valladolid in Castile and León . It was founded in 1928 . The first team currently plays in the Primera División , the second team in Group I of the Segunda División B .
history
The club was created on June 20, 1928 through the merger of the clubs Real Unión Deportiva and Club Deportivo Español , both from Valladolid. The first president and leading figure in the merger was Pedro Zuloaga Mañueco. On the following September 22nd, the club played its first game; Opponent was Deportivo Alavés and won 2-1. At that time, the club played its games on a field near the bullring in Valladolid, which was replaced in 1940 by the old José Zorrilla Municipal Stadium. This gave way for the 1982 World Cup to the current Estadio José Zorrilla , where the team plays their games and the club has its headquarters and offices.
In the 1947/48 season Real Valladolid rose for the first time in the Primera División after they had become champions of the second division. In the 1949/50 season, the team was in the final for the then Copa del Generalísimo called Copa del Rey for the first time , but lost 4-1 to Athletic Bilbao .
From 1948/49 to 1957/58 the club played first class and, after relegation in the 1958/59 season, achieved direct promotion. The then coach José Luis Saso is now considered a club legend, as he had already played as a player (goalkeeper) in the first team and later was coach, sports director and club president. He died on September 17, 2006 and was a member of the club's management until shortly before his death.
After the 1960/61 season they rose again, which was again followed in the following season by promotion. In the 1962/63 season, under coach Antoni Ramallets , the club achieved fourth place, the best result in the first division to date.
Since its inception, Real Valladolid has spent a total of 37 seasons in the Primera División, 27 in the Segunda División, one in Segunda División B and nine in the Tercera División. He was twice in the cup final ( 1950 , 1989 ), but lost in both cases. In 1942, 1952, 1961 and 1979 the team reached the cup semi-finals. In the 1983/84 season, the club won its first official title, the Spanish League Cup.
Real Valladolid qualified three times for European Cup competitions: in 1984/85 and 1997/98 they took part in the UEFA Cup and in 1989/90 in the European Cup Winners' Cup , in which the team at least made it to the quarter-finals, but failed on penalties at AS Monaco .
After 13 years in a row in the first division, he was relegated to the Segunda División in 2004 . After two unsuccessful attempts, the rise was due in 2006/07 . Valladolid became second division champions after an excellent season. During the season, the team set an incredible club record and remained unbeaten 29 games in a row. In the 2007/08 season the primary goal, relegation, was achieved.
In February 2010, coach José Luis Mendilibar was sacked. Onésimo, the previous coach of the second team, replaced him. At the beginning of April, this was also dismissed because the downward trend of the club did not improve. At the end of the 2009/10 season they rose as nineteenth in the table back to the Segunda División. After two seasons in the second division succeeded at the end of the 2011/12 season by third place in the Segunda División and subsequent victories in the play-offs against FC Córdoba and the AD Alcorcón of promotion to the Primera División.
On September 3, 2018, former world footballer Ronaldo bought 51 percent of the club's shares. The Brazilian became the main shareholder of the club and has been president since then.
