José Luis Mendilibar Etxebarria (born March 14, 1961 in Zaldibar ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach .

Player career

As a player, José Luis Mendilibar never played in the first Spanish league, but mainly with lower-class teams. The Basque once played in the 2nd team from the traditional Basque club Athletic Bilbao , but was never able to assert himself there. In 1994 Mendilibar ended his career with SD Lemona without ever leaving the Basque Country as a player.

Coaching career

The beginnings

Immediately after his playing career, Mendilibar took over his first club as head coach. First from 1994 to 1996 at the amateur club Arratia in the southernmost comarca of the Basque Country . In the next three years he coached various youth teams of his ex-club as a player Athletic Bilbao . From 1999 to 2001 he was finally allowed to take over the second team. After five years as an amateur and youth coach, Mendilibar left Bilbao and took over again a club from Spanish amateur football, Aurrera Vitora .

At UD Lanzarote he was able to convince the critics, so that he went to SD Eibar in 2004/05 . With the Basques he reached 4th place in the Segunda División in his first and only season . So he was very close to being promoted to the Spanish elite league.

Athletic Bilbao

In the summer of 2005 Mendilibar returned for the third time to Bilbao, but for the first time as a first division coach. His return was unsuccessful. With Athletic Bilbao's worst start to the season to date , the signs were early to say goodbye and so it should come after a few months. After 6 points from the first 9 games, Javier Clemente took over his position.

Real Valladolid

In the summer of 2006, Mendilibar signed with Real Valladolid . In its inaugural season, he led the traditional club back to the first division with a very young team made up almost entirely of Spaniards (in the end they had 88 points in their account). There he led the club to a good place in the first half of the table after the first half of the season. Mendilibar was fired from Valladolid in February 2010 due to unsuccessfulness.

CA Osasuna

In February 2011, it was announced that Mendilibar would succeed Antonio Camacho . Mendilibar signed a contract in Osasuna until June 2012.

Levant UD

In the summer of 2014 Levante signed UD Mendilibar, but released him in October of the same year. At this point Levante was in penultimate place in the Primera División.
