UD Lanzarote (officially: Unión Deportiva Lanzarote ) is a Spanish football club that currently plays in Group 12 of the Tercera División , the fourth highest Spanish division. The association is based in Arrecife . The club plays its home games in the 7,000-seat Ciudad Deportiva de Lanzarote .

history

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote was created in August 1970 through a merger of several local clubs with the aim of forming a strong team. In the beginning, the team played on volcanic granulate (Spanish : picón ) until they finally moved to FIFA-approved artificial turf .

In its first season 1970/71, the team won the Segunda Regional Insular , the second highest regional division. After that, the club played for several years in lower-class regional leagues until they were promoted to the Tercera División for the first time in 1980. In the first season there, the club was able to establish itself with a fifth place and was also able to qualify for the first time for the Copa del Rey . There the team reached a 0-0 draw against UD Las Palmas in the first leg, but they lost well 5-0 in the second leg.

In the 1998/99 season, the club rose to the third-class Segunda División B for the first time thanks to a third place . The stay in the league was only short, however, because in the following season they were relegated again.

From the 2001/02 season on, Lanzarote consolidated its position in the Segunda División B. In a cup game against CD Tenerife , Maciot shot a hat trick in a 5-1 surprise win in front of 5000 Lanzarote fans, making it a club legend. The reward for this was a clash with the first division club Real Madrid with players like Raúl González Blanco , Luís Figo and Zinedine Zidane , which attracted over 12,000 spectators. After the favorites' lead early, Oscar Vladamir equalized and secured his place in football history, but the club ultimately lost 3-1 anyway.

Lanzarote finished the 2002/03 season in third place, making it the first time they reached the play-offs for the Segunda División. In the cup, the club lost 2-1 to Atlético Madrid with a late goal from Fernando Torres .

2003/04 was Lanzarote's best season, as champions they came back to the play-offs. Also this season they showed a good performance in the cup, this time against Sevilla FC . Seville manager Joaquín Caparrós refused to let his team play on Lanzarote's artificial turf, so the game took place in Gran Canaria . In front of over 5000 spectators, UD Lanzarote lost to a goal from Júlio Baptista .

In the 2004/05 Cup, Lanzarote defeated RCD Mallorca 2-1 and also beat the top club Athletic Bilbao in the first leg , also 2-1. However, a 6-0 draw in the second leg at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao missed the quarter-finals. From 2004 to 2009 Lanzarote always ended up in the midfield of the league until they were relegated in the 2009/10 season as twentieth. The club has played in the Tercera Division since the 2010/11 season.
