Zinédine Yazid Zidane , O. LH [ zineˈdin jaˈzid ziˈdan ] (born June 23, 1972 in Marseille ) is a French football coach and former player.

He has been named FIFA World Player of the Year three times and FIFA Coach of the Year once . With the French national team he became world and European champion as a player . With Juventus Turin he won the FIFA Club World Cup and two Italian championships , with Real Madrid once the UEFA Champions League and once the Spanish championship .

In his first job as coach of Real Madrid from 2016 to 2018, Zidane won a Spanish championship, a Supercopa de España and two FIFA Club World Cups and two UEFA Super Cups . He was also the first and so far only coach to win the Champions League three times in a row. Since March 12, 2019 he has been coach of Real Madrid again.

Life

Zidane, often called Zizou [ ziˈzu ] in France , was born the son of Algerian immigrants ( Berbers from Kabylia ) in Marseille . There he grew up with his three brothers Nordine, Farid († July 13, 2019), Djamel and his sister Lila in the problem area of La Castellane. His first club was US Saint-Henri , a neighborhood club; his second, from 1983 to 1987, Sports Olympiques Septèmes-les-Vallons on the northernmost outskirts of Marseille. Zidane, a big fan of Olympique Marseille , was discovered by Jean Varraud at the age of 14 and accepted into the AS Cannes football boarding school.

At the request of his parents, he was initially placed with a host family, the Ellineaus. At the age of 15 he lived in a room in the regional boarding school for vocational school students, where he met his wife, Véronique Fernández, a former professional dancer. With her he has four sons: Enzo (* 1995), Luca (* 1998), Theo (* 2002) and Elyaz (* 2005). They all play or have played in Real Madrid youth teams. Luca won the European Championship as a goalkeeper with the French U-17 team in 2015 and took part in the U-17 World Cup in 2015 , where France was eliminated in the round of 16.

AS Cannes

At the age of 16, on May 20, 1989, Zidane was used for the first time in a first division meeting of the AS Cannes team : coach Jean Fernandez replaced him in the 78th minute of the away game at FC Nantes . In the game against Nantes on February 12, 1991, he scored his first first division goal. He also played his first European Cup matches for Cannes: on September 11, 1991 in the UEFA Cup with Portuguese representative SC Salgueiros .

Girondins Bordeaux

After relegation with Cannes, Zidane moved to Girondins Bordeaux in 1992 , where he was nicknamed "Zizou" by his trainer Rolland Courbis . There he played together with later national team colleagues Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry and the Dutch international Richard Witschge . The highlight of Zidane's time in Bordeaux was reaching the UEFA Cup finals in 1996, after Bordeaux had only qualified for this competition through the UEFA Intertoto Cup . Zidane at Real Madrid (2003)

In 2001, Zidane moved to Real Madrid for the then record sum of around 77.5 million euros (the transfer fee was given by Turin at 150 billion Italian lira ). The Frenchman won the Champions League for the first time at Real: With his goal in the final in Glasgow in 2002 against Bayer Leverkusen , the Madrilenians won the game 2-1. In 2003, Zidane won the Spanish championship with Real Madrid. In the same year, he was voted FIFA World Player of the Year for the third time.

Although his contract originally ran until 2007, Zidane played his last game for Real on May 7, 2006 against Sevilla FC . He then ended his career in club football.

National player

1994–2000: World Champion and European Champion

Zidane made his international debut against the Czech Republic in the Equipe Tricolore on August 17, 1994 , scoring two goals. At the European Championship in 1996 he was part of the team and was in all five French games.

When the French national team won the title at the World Cup in their own country in 1998, Zidane was the head of the French team despite a red card suspension that prevented him from participating in the third group game and the round of 16. In the final against Brazil , Zidane scored two headed goals for the 2-0 half-time lead. The game was finally won 3-0, making France world champions for the first time.

After a mixed qualification, the playmaker led the Equipe Tricolore to the European title two years later . In the quarter-finals (2: 1 against Spain ) and in the semi-finals (2: 1 afterwards against Portugal ) Zidane scored once. He scored the golden goal against Portugal with a hand penalty . Then, as in 1998, Zidane won the FIFA World Player of the Year election.

2000–2006: World Cup in Japan and South Korea, European Championship in Greece and resignation

In the following tournaments Zidane could not maintain this high level. Just before the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea Zidane pulled a hamstring on his left thigh, and spent the first two group matches on the bench. France retired as world champions in the preliminary round. At the 2004 European Championship he was eliminated with the French national team in the quarter-finals against eventual European champions Greece . On August 12, 2004, Zidane announced his retirement from the national team. He returned a year later and played for France again in the final stages of World Cup qualification. He decided to return after talking to his brother at night.

Even before the 2006 World Cup , Zidane's decision was made to end his career after the tournament. After two draws and a yellow card suspension, he was able to survive the group with the team and scored a goal in the round of 16 against Spain to make it 3-1. In the quarter-finals he prepared the decisive goal in the 1-0 win against Brazil and was voted player of the match after the game . In the semi-final against Portugal (1-0), Zidane scored himself. In the final against Italy , Zidane scored an early 1-0 penalty, making him the fourth player to score in two World Cup finals after Vavá , Pelé and Paul Breitner could. In the 109th minute of his last game, he was sent off with a red card after a headbutt against Marco Materazzi . This was the 15th red card of his career. This incident was triggered by insults by Materazzi against Zidane, which Materazzi initially denied, but admitted a few days later. The Gazzetta dello Sport told Materazzi that he only briefly held Zidane's jersey. The Frenchman eyed him condescendingly and said that if he wanted he could have the shirt after the game. Materazzi replied that he preferred Zidane's sister. On August 18, 2007, Materazzi admitted on Italian television that he had replied verbatim to Zidane's offer to give him his jersey: "Preferisco la puttana di tua sorella" . Because of the headbutt, Zidane was suspended from FIFA for three games and a fine of 7,500 Swiss francs was imposed on him. The suspension was insignificant for the French, however, as he ended his career after the 2006 World Cup anyway. Instead, he made himself available for three days for social work with children and young people. Marco Materazzi was also punished.

Zidane was voted Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. However, the election had already taken place before the final, which Italy won 5-3 on penalties.

In a total of 108 international matches, Zidane scored 31 goals for the Equipe Tricolore . After completing his career, he once again came second in the 2006 election for World Footballer of the Year .

In December 2008, Zidane and his former teammates from Girondins Bordeaux, Bixente Lizarazu and Alain Boghossian , bought the then third division Olympique Croix de Savoie 74 , who played in Ligue 1 from 2011 to 2015.

The road to license with Real Madrid Castilla's B team

For the 2014/15 season, Zidane took over Real Madrid's second team , relegated to the third-class Segunda División B , as head coach. In August 2014, Zidane, who did not have the required coaching license to train the team, was reported to the association by the Spanish coaching association CENAFE. Because of this, in the first game of the season, Santiago Sánchez was given as head coach and Zidane as his assistant. In the following games, Zidane was again listed as a coach. In October, the Spanish Football Association first imposed a three-month ban, which was temporarily suspended a few days later. In the spring of 2015, he received the UEFA Pro coach license and from then on was the official coach of Real Madrid Castilla.

Three Champions League wins with Real Madrid

Role in the Italian doping scandal

In the context of a court case, persons responsible at the Italian club Juventus Turin were initiated for systematic doping of the entire team in the years 1994–1998.
