Vicente del Bosque González , Marqués de Del Bosque [ biˈθente ðel ˈβoske ] (born December 23, 1950 in Salamanca ), is a former Spanish football player and coach . With Real Madrid he won a total of seven Spanish championships as a player and coach . He also led the club to two Champions League titles in 2000 and 2002 . In 2010 he became world champion as coach of the Spanish national soccer team and European champion in 2012 .

Player career

Del Bosque has played for Real Madrid since he was a child . He won five championship titles with the Madrilenians as a player and four times the Spanish Cup, the Copa del Rey . For the Spanish national team, he completed 18 games. In 1980 he took part in the European Championship with Spain and came to an action against Belgium .

Trainer and functionary career

After his active career, del Bosque worked as a youth coordinator at Real Madrid. Several times he was an interim solution for the coaching post, such as in 1994 or 1999. But when the stop-gap led Real to the eighth title in the Champions League or in the national championship cup in 2000 , he received a multi-year contract from Florentino Pérez , the then president Coach of the professional team. At the same time, a clause in his contract said that if he was unsuccessful he could return directly to the youth sector and get his old post back. In the 2000/01 season del Bosque was able to win the championship with Real Madrid. Due to his calm and balanced manner, he managed to lead a team that was equipped with stars (e.g. Luís Figo , Zinédine Zidane , Ronaldo , Roberto Carlos , Raúl ) without any conflicts or quarrels.

In the 2001/02 season , the always calm and humble coach won the Champions League again with Real Madrid. When his contract was not renewed by the club's leadership at the end of the 2002/03 season , he had led the Madrilenians to two Spanish championships and two Champions League triumphs in just over three years. His successors could not build on these successes; the continuity on the bench was lost. It was not until the 2006/07 season that the championship title was brought back to Madrid and the Champions League was won again in 2013/14 . The dismissal of del Bosque was u. a. Justified by the club management that a new profile was being sought for the Real coach.

In the past few years, del Bosque u. a. by repeatedly criticizing the former Real Madrid board under the leadership of then President Pérez in the media.

He won a total of seven championship titles, five Spanish cups, two Champions League titles as well as the Spanish and European Supercup and the World Cup with Real Madrid as a player and coach .

From June 2004 del Bosque was coach at the Turkish first division side Beşiktaş Istanbul , but was dismissed there on January 27, 2005 for failure.

Cádiz FC

In June 2007 he went to the Spanish second division club FC Cádiz , where he acted as sports director. It was a project by President Arturo Baldasano, the new owner of the association. Baldasano had previously run for the presidential election of Real Madrid in 2006 and announced that if he won, he would sign del Bosque again as Real Madrid coach.

In July 2008, del Bosque signed a two-year contract with the Spanish Football Association , succeeding the resigned Luis Aragonés . He played his first international match with the newly crowned European champion on August 20, 2008 against Denmark . In December 2009, his contract was extended for a further two years after he had won all ten games in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup with Spain. On July 11, 2010, he won the 2010 World Cup with Spain with a 1-0 win nV over the Netherlands . Two years later, del Bosque led the Spanish national team to successfully defend their title at the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine in 2012 , the only one so far by a European champion. In the final on July 1, 2012, his team beat Italy 4-0 and set a new record: in the history of the European Championship, no team has won the final more clearly. In addition, the Spanish national team became the first team ever to win three major titles in a row.

Del Bosque is the second coach after Marcello Lippi to win the highest European competition in club football, the Champions League , and to become world champion . At the age of 59, he is also the oldest coach of a world championship team, surpassing Helmut Schön , who was 58 years and 296 days old when Germany won the second World Cup in 1974 .

On March 22, 2013, he looked after the Spanish team for the 69th time in the 1-1 draw in the World Cup qualifier against Finland , making it the Spanish record coach. He replaced László Kubala as the record holder, who had been national coach for 68 games between October 1969 and June 1980.

On November 15, 2013, he confirmed that he had extended his contract to 2016. In October 2014 he stated that he wanted to resign as national coach after the 2016 European Championships .

On June 14, 2015, he coached the Spanish team for the 100th international match in the European Championship qualifier against Belarus . On June 30, 2016, he resigned his coaching position as the Spanish national coach and announced his withdrawal from football.

Del Bosque is married and has three children.

On February 3, 2011 he was awarded the title of Marqués de Del Bosque by King Juan Carlos I for his commitment to sport in Spain and the promotion of his values .

In 2017, Del Bosque was awarded the Walter Bensemann Prize for life's work as part of the German Football Culture Prize.
