Robert Moreno González (born September 19, 1977 in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat ) is a Spanish football coach . He began his coaching career in the youth and amateur field and worked from then on for several years as Luis Enrique's assistant coach .

Career

Assistant coach under Luis Enrique

Moreno started his coaching career at an early age and was initially active in the youth department of the clubs Penya Blaugrana Collblanc, CE L'Hospitalet , UE Castelldefels and CF Damm . In 2010 Luis Enrique brought him to the second team of FC Barcelona . For the 2011/12 season he followed Luis Enrique to AS Roma and left the club with him after a year. After both were unemployed in the 2012/13 season, Moreno became assistant coach of Celta Vigo under Luis Enrique for the 2012/13 season . For the 2014/15 season he followed Luis Enrique to FC Barcelona, with whom they became Champions League winners , champions and cup winners in their first year . In the further course of her activity, the championships followed in 2016, the cup wins in 2016 and 2017 , as well as the UEFA Super Cup 2015, the Club World Cup 2015 and the Spanish Supercup 2016. After Luis Enrique's resignation after the weaker 2016/17 season , Moreno also left the Society. For the 2017/18 season , Moreno returned to Celta Vigo and henceforth assisted Juan Carlos Unzué , who had previously been another assistant coach to Luis Enrique in Vigo and Barcelona.

Spanish national team

When Luis Enrique became head coach of the Spanish national team in July 2018 , he became his assistant coach again. Since Luis Enrique was unable to attend the international match against Malta in March 2019 for private reasons , Moreno was on the sidelines in the 2-0 victory. Luis Enrique was also unable to return to the coaching bench in June 2019 in the internationals against Faroe Islands (4-1) and Sweden (3-0), which is why Moreno also represented him in these games. On June 19, 2019, Luis Enrique resigned as head coach and Moreno was appointed as his successor. At the end of August 2019, Luis Enrique's daughter died of bone cancer at the age of 9 . After the team under Moreno had successfully qualified for the European Championship in 2021 (initially planned for 2020), Luis Enrique was reappointed national coach in November 2019. Moreno announced in September that, due to the friendship with Luis Enrique, he would take over the role of assistant coach again if he wanted to return. However, after learning of his replacement the day before in the half-time of the qualifying match against Romania (5-0) through the press, he left the association. Luis Enrique stated at his introduction press conference that he was responsible for Moreno's departure. Moreno had told him that he would only give him the post of head coach again after the European Championship and that he would become his assistant coach. Luis Enrique described Moreno as "disloyal" and announced that he no longer wanted to work with him. Moreno contradicted these representations.

AS Monaco

On December 30, 2019, Moreno took over the AS Monaco Ligue 1 team , which was 7th with 28 points after the 19th matchday of the 2019/20 season, as the successor to Leonardo Jardim . He received a contract with a term until June 30, 2022. The season was interrupted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later canceled. AS Monaco took 9th place after a quotient regulation. Moreno was released in mid-July 2020 and shortly afterwards Niko Kovač was introduced as the new trainer in Monaco.
