Juan Carlos Unzué Labiano (born April 22, 1967 in Pamplona ) is a former Spanish football goalkeeper and current coach .

Player career

Unzué played his first professional game in the service of CA Osasuna in the 0-0 away draw against Real Murcia on February 8, 1987. In this and the following season, he made seven more league games for CA Osasuna. In 1988 he moved to FC Barcelona . In his two years with the Catalans, he consistently remained the substitute goalkeeper behind Andoni Zubizarreta and made five appearances in the league. At the same time, FC Barcelona was the only station in his career where he won titles, namely the 1990 Spanish Cup and the 1988/89 European Cup Winners' Cup . In 1990 he switched to Sevilla FC . At the first division club from Andalusia he missed almost no league game in the first five seasons, and in his sixth season he played more than half of the league games. Only his seventh and last season at Seville, in which he was initially only second goalkeeper after Monchi , was marked by failure by relegation to the Segunda División at the end of the 1996/97 season .

For the 1997/98 season he switched to CD Tenerife . In his two-year stay in the Canary Islands, he completed around half of all league games and was relegated to the second Spanish league again in his second year. Between 1999 and 2001 he played for Real Oviedo , but remained there without playing a single league game, substitute goalkeeper behind Esteban . With Oviedo he had to go to the second Spanish division for the third time in the 2000/01 season . Since Unzué did not want to go to the second division, he moved back to his home club CA Osasuna. In the first year he was still a regular goalkeeper, in the second year only second choice, so that Unzué decided to end his career after the 2002/03 season.

Coaching career

In 2003 he was appointed goalkeeping coach of FC Barcelona under coach Frank Rijkaard . Even after Rijkaard's dismissal, he remained in this position under the new coach Pep Guardiola and was in office until the end of the 2009/10 season. For the 2010/11 season Unzué took over the coaching of CD Numancia . After leading Numancia in tenth place in the Segunda División this season , he then returned to FC Barcelona as goalkeeping coach.

On June 19, 2012, Real Racing Club de Santander announced that Unzué would be the head coach of the professional team for the new season. A few months later, the club separated again from Unzué.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Unzué returned to FC Barcelona as assistant coach under the new coach Luis Enrique . He has been training Celta Vigo since May 2017 .
