Breton sound

The Breton Sound is a sound in the Gulf of Mexico off the southeast coast of the US state Louisiana .

The marine area is bounded to the north by the Biloxi State Wildlife Management Area , to the west and southwest by Plaquemines Parish and the Delta National Wildlife Refuge with the estuary of the Mississippi River Delta . In the northeast, the sound is bounded by the Chandeleur Islands with the Breton Islands , which belong to the Breton National Wildlife Refuge , and the Chandeleur Sound .

In late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina crossed the area before reaching the coast near Pearlington , Mississippi . At the end of April 2010, the Breton Islands were among the first land areas to be reached by the oil spill caused by the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon .
