The Plaquemines Parish ( French Paroisse des Plaquemines ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 23,042 residents and a population density of 10.6 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Pointe a la Hache .
geography
The Parish is located in the extreme southeast of Louisiana, is almost 70% surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 6290 square kilometers, of which 4102 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
The Plaquemines Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes.
Three of the Parish sites have National Historic Landmark status due to their historical significance , Fort De La Boulaye Site , Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip . A total of eight structures and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 8, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Plaquemines Parish had 26,757 people in 9,021 households and 7,000 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.77 percent white, 23.39 percent African American, 2.07 percent Native American, 2.62 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.73 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.42 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.62 percent of the population.
Of the 9,021 households, 39.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.5 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers, 22.4 percent were non-families, 18.6 percent were single households, and 7.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.30.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population consisted of 29.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 97.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,173 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 42,610 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,245 versus $ 21,691 women. The per capita income was $ 15,937. 15.4 percent of families and 18.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 20.7 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
