The Washington Parish ( French Paroisse de Washington ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 47,168 residents and a population density of 27.2 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Franklinton .

The Parish is located in eastern Louisiana, borders Mississippi to both the north and east and has an area of ​​1751 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

Washington Parish was formed in 1819 from parts of St. Tammany Parish. It was named after George Washington (1732–1799), the first President of the USA.

According to the 2000 census , the Washington Parish had 43,926 people in 16,467 households and 11,642 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.42 percent white, 31.53 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 26.8 percent residents under 18 years of age, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 92.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,264 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,480. Males had a median income of $ 27,964 versus $ 17,709 for females.
