The St. Charles Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Charles ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 52,780 residents and a population density of 71.9 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Hahnville .

The Parish is located in southeast Louisiana, about 60 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of 1062 square kilometers, of which 328 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
The St. Charles Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes.
One building in the Parish has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Homeplace Plantation House , due to its historical significance . A total of six buildings and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , St. Charles Parish had 48,072 people in 16,422 households and 13,088 families. The population density was 65 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.40 percent white, 25.23 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.55 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.80 percent of the population.
Of the 16,422 households, 43.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.4 percent were married couples living together, 14.7 percent were single mothers, 20.3 percent were non-families, 16.7 percent were single households and 5.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.27.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 30.3 percent residents under 18 years of age, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 91.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,139 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,562. Males had a median income of $ 40,651 versus $ 24,780 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,054. 9.3 percent of families and 11.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 14.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years and 12.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
