The Catahoula Parish ( French. : Paroisse de Catahoula ) is a Parish in US -amerikanischen State Louisiana . In 2010 , the parish had 10,407 residents and a population density of 5.7 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population had decreased to 10,238. The Parish Seat is Harrisonburg .

The Parish is located in north-central Louisiana and has an area of ​​1915 square kilometers, of which 93 square kilometers are water.

It is bounded to the east by the Ouachita River , which is referred to here as the Black River and flows into the Red River at the southeast corner of Parish . This forms the southern border of the Catahoula Parish.

Around 35 km to the east, the Mississippi forms the border between Louisiana and the neighboring state of Mississippi .

The Catahoula Parish was formed in 1808 from parts of the Ouachita Parish and the Rapides Parish. The name is derived from the word Taensa (a subgroup of the Natchez ) for large, clear sea .

According to the 2010 census , Catahoula Parish had 10,407 people in 3,753 households. The population density was 5.7 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.57 people lived in each of the 3753 households.

The racial the population was composed of 66.8 percent white, 31.8 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.2 percent of the population.

22.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.3 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years or older. 47.0 percent of the population were female.
