The West Carroll Parish ( French Paroisse de Carroll Ouest ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the parish had 11,604 residents and a population density of 12.5 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Oak Grove .
geography
The Parish is located in northeast Louisiana, borders Arkansas in the north , is about 30 km from Mississippi in the east and has an area of 933 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

history
The north of Louisiana was settled in prehistoric times. In West Carroll Parish is Poverty Point , an archaeological site and a memorial for the unique earthworks of the so-called Poverty Point Culture at the end of the Archaic period between the 18th and 10th centuries BC The parish was formed in 1877 from parts of the Carroll Parish.
As a site of particular historical importance, Poverty Point has the status of a National Historic Landmark and is a National Monument . It has been a World Heritage Site in the United States of America since 2014 . A total of two other structures and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , West Carroll Parish had 12,314 people in 4,458 households and 3,249 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.89 percent white, 18.88 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.43 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.35 percent of the population.
Of the 4,458 households, 33.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 12.3 percent were single mothers, 27.1 percent were non-families, 24.8 percent were single households, and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.09.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population consisted of 25.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 102.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 99.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 24,637 USD , and the median income for a family was 31,806 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,211 versus $ 18,477 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,302. 18.2 percent of families and 23.4 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 30.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 22.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
