The Tangipahoa Parish ( French : Paroisse de Tangipahoa ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 121,097 inhabitants and a population density of 59.2 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Amite City .

The Parish is located almost in the far east of Louisiana, borders Mississippi to the north and has an area of 2132 square kilometers, of which 85 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

The Tangipahoa Parish was formed in 1868 from parts of the Livingston Parish, St. Helena Parish, St. Tammany Parish and Washington Parish.

According to the 2000 census , Tangipahoa Parish had 100,588 people in 36,558 households and 25,773 families. The population density was 49 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.76 percent white, 28.35 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.53 percent of the population.

Of the 36,558 households, 35.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 49.9 percent were married couples living together, 16.2 percent were single mothers, 29.5 percent were non-families, 24.0 percent were single households and 8.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.19.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 27.7 percent residents under 18 years of age, 12.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 88.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,412 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,731. Males had a median income of $ 31,576 versus $ 20,066 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,461. 18.0 percent of families 22.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. These included 28.6 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.1 percent of people over 65 years of age.
