The St. Bernard Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Bernard ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010 the Parish had a population of 35,897 and a population density of 11.9 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Chalmette .

The Parish is located in the southeast of Louisiana, is bounded in the north by Lake Borgne , in the northeast to south by the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 4646 square kilometers, of which 3441 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
The Parish was named after Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid's patron saint . St. Bernard Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes.

According to the 2000 census , St. Bernard Parish had 67,229 people in 25,123 households and 18,289 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.29 percent white, 7.62 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 1.32 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.73 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.52 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 5.09 percent of the population.
Of the 25,123 households, 33.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.4 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers, 27.2 percent were non-families, 22.9 percent were single households, and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.12.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 25.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 90.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,939 USD , and the median income for a family was 42,785 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,303 versus $ 24,009 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,718. 10.5 percent of families 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 16.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
