The Evangeline Parish ( French Paroisse d'Évangéline ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 33,984 residents and a population density of 19.8 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Ville Platte .

The Parish is located slightly west of the geographic center of Louisiana, is about 100 km to the south from the Gulf of Mexico , to the west also about 100 km from Texas and has an area of 1760 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
Evangeline Parish was formed in 1910 from parts of St. Landry Parish. The first settlers were Germans, French, Spaniards, Scots and Irish, with the French share of the population being the largest and a French-Creole mix preserved to this day.
The name goes back to the poem Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow .
Six of the Parish's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 4, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Evangeline Parish had 35,434 people in 12,736 households and 9,157 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.42 percent white, 28.57 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.18 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.46 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 12,736 households, 38.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 15.5 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent were single households and 11.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.19.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 29.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 98.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 20,532 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,243. Males had a median income of $ 30,386 versus $ 16,793 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,432. 27.2 percent of families, 32.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 39.1 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 31.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
