The West Feliciana Parish ( French : Paroisse de Feliciana Ouest ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the parish had 15,625 residents and a population density of 15.6 people per square kilometer. By 2013, the population had decreased to 15,406. The Parish Seat is St. Francisville .
The West Feliciana Parish is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Baton Rouge .

The Parish is east of the geographic center of Louisiana, borders Mississippi to the north and has an area of 1103 square kilometers, of which 52 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

history
The parish was named after Maria Feliciana Saint-Maxent, the wife of Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid . West Feliciana Parish was formed in 1824 from parts of the Feliciana Parish.
One building in the Parish has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Rosedown Plantation , due to its historical significance . A total of 32 buildings and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

The racial the population was composed of 52.9 percent white, 45.9 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.4 percent of the population.
16.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 71.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years or older. 34.3 percent of the population were female. The imbalance in the gender distribution results from the Angola detention center , whose inmates are added to the other residents of the parish in the census.
The median income for a household was 61,616 USD . The per capita income was $ 21,720. 16.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.

Detention center
On a peninsula of the Mississippi in the northwest of the Parish lies the Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola or The Farm . The detention center is the largest maximum security prison in the United States.
