The De Soto Parish ( French : Paroisse De Soto ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 26,656 residents and a population density of 11.7 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Mansfield .

De Soto Parish is part of the metropolitan area of Shreveport - Bossier City on the Red River .

De Soto Parish was formed in 1843 from parts of the Caddo Parish and the Natchitoches Parish. It was named after Hernando de Soto (around 1500–1542), the leader of the first whites on the Mississippi .

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census , De Soto Parish had 25,494 people in 9,691 households and 6,967 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.97 percent white, 42.16 percent African American, 0.51 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.11.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 28.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 90.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 87.0 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,252 , and the median income for a family was $ 33,196. Males had a median income of $ 30,780 versus $ 20,182 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,606. 21.0 percent of families and 25.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line. 33.8 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 24.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
