The St. Martin Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Martin ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 52,160 inhabitants and a population density of 27.2 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is St. Martinville .
geography
The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, about 70 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of 2115 square kilometers, of which 198 square kilometers are water. The St. Martin Parish is divided into two not directly related territories: the Upper St. Martin Parish and the Lower St. Martin Parish . The parish is adjacent to the following parishes:

history
St. Martin Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. It was named after the canonized Martin of Tours ( St. Martin ).
One building in the Parish has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Acadian House , due to its historical significance . A total of 25 buildings and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , St. Martin Parish had 48,583 people in 17,164 households and 12,975 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.95 percent white, 31.98 percent African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.83 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 17,164 households, 39.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.9 percent were single mothers, 24.4 percent were non-families, 20.7 percent were single households, and 7.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.22.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 29.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 93.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,701 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,316. Males had a median income of $ 30,701 versus $ 18,365 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,619. 18.4 percent of families and 21.5 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 22.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
