Henderson is a small town with 1,531 inhabitants in 2000 and is located in St. Martin Parish in the US state of Louisiana .
Henderson is located on the western edge of the Atchafalaya Basin marshland, which is recognized as a national cultural heritage , between Lafayette in the west and Baton Rouge in the east on and thus in the center of the Cajun Country, which is characterized by francophone immigrants .
The Interstate-10 -Highway herein as Atchafalaya Swamp Freeway is known, leads north to Henderson over and crossed on stilts a 29.3 km long elevated road to Henderson Lake and the wetlands of the Atchafalaya River , an estuary of the Mississippi River .
