The Jackson Parish ( French : Paroisse de Jackson ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the parish had 16,274 residents and a population density of 11 residents per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Jonesboro .

The Parish is located in northern Louisiana, about 50 km to the north from Arkansas , about 100 km to the west and east from Texas and Mississippi , and has an area of ​​1,503 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history

Jackson Parish was formed in 1845 from parts of the Claiborne Parish, the Ouachita Parish, and the Union Parish. It was named after the 7th  US President Andrew Jackson .

Five structures and sites in the Parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 5, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Jackson Parish had 15,397 people in 6,086 households and 4,302 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.01 percent white, 27.87 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.37 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 87.5 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,352 USD , and the median income for a family was 36,317 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,977 versus $ 19,992 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,354. 16.0 percent of families and 19.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 26.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
