The Avoyelles Parish is located roughly in the geographic center of Louisiana and borders on its eastern edge at the confluence of the Red River in the Atchafalaya . The Avoyelles Parish was formed on March 31, 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. It was named after the Avoyelles Indians who used to live here.
The Marksville Prehistoric Indian Site has the status of a National Historic Landmark because of its special historical significance .
