The St. Mary Parish ( French Paroisse de Sainte-Marie ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 54,650 residents and a population density of 34.4 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Franklin .

The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2898 square kilometers, of which 1311 square kilometers are water.
The largest watercourse in St. Mary Parish is the Atchafalaya River , a common estuary of the Mississippi and Red Rivers , which flows into the sea south of Morgan City .

According to the 2000 census , St. Mary Parish had 53,500 people in 19,317 households and 14,082 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.79 percent white, 31.79 percent African American, 1.39 percent Native American, 1.64 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.88 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.50 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.15 percent of the population.
Of the 19,317 households, 36.7 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 16.5 percent were single mothers, 27.1 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent were single households, and 8.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.23.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 29.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 92.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,072 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,064. Males had a median income of $ 31,570 versus $ 18,341 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,399. 20.6 percent of families and 23.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 31.3 percent were children or young people under the age of 18 and 19.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
