According to the 2000 census , St. Mary Parish had 53,500 people in 19,317 households and 14,082 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.79 percent white, 31.79 percent African American, 1.39 percent Native American, 1.64 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.88 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.50 percent were descended from two or more races.
