The Lafayette Parish ( French : Paroisse de Lafayette ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 221,578 residents and a population density of 317 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Lafayette .
The Lafayette Parish is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Lafayette.

The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 700 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
Lafayette Parish was formed on January 17, 1823 from parts of St. Martin Parish. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette .
In addition to the Spaniards, the first Europeans in the region were mainly English and French traders and fur hunters. In 1766 the area officially became part of Spain.
From 1755, the immigration of the Acadians from the former French Atlantic provinces ( Acadiana ) in Canada (also called "Le Grand Derangement" ) had a major influence on the region .
In 1803 the area came to the USA. The city of Vermilionville became the administrative center of the newly formed Lafayette Parish in 1823. In 1884 the city was renamed Lafayette.

According to the 2000 census , Lafayette Parish had 190,503 people in 72,372 households and 48,851 families. The population density was 273 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.36 percent white, 23.80 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 1.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.52 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.74 percent of the population.
Of the 72,372 households, 36.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 49.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.0 percent were single mothers, 32.5 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent were single households and 6.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.12.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 27.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 11.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,518 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,158. Males had a median income of $ 36,428 versus $ 22,751 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,371. 11.8 percent of families and 15.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 18.2 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
