history

Lafayette

Lafayette Parish was formed on January 17, 1823 from parts of St. Martin Parish. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette .

In addition to the Spaniards, the first Europeans in the region were mainly English and French traders and fur hunters. In 1766 the area officially became part of Spain.

From 1755, the immigration of the Acadians from the former French Atlantic provinces ( Acadiana ) in Canada (also called "Le Grand Derangement" ) had a major influence on the region .

In 1803 the area came to the USA. The city of Vermilionville became the administrative center of the newly formed Lafayette Parish in 1823. In 1884 the city was renamed Lafayette.

34 buildings and sites in the Parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 5, 2017).
