Duson is a town partly in Acadia Parish and partly in Lafayette Parish in the US state of Louisiana . In the United States Census 2000 , the place had 1672 inhabitants. The town's namesake is Curley Duson .
The part belonging to Lafayette Parish is located in the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Lafayette , while the part of Dusons located in Acadia Parish is part of the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Crowley .
history
Originally known as Duson Station , the town was founded by JG Parkerson, general manager of the Louisiana Western Railroad . On August 30, 1880, the railway line from New Orleans to Houston was completed and operations with freight and passenger trains began. In 1900 the company was merged with the Southern Pacific Railroad . Duson was incorporated as a village on December 16, 1909 and Adolph De Jean was appointed its first mayor. The place was named after the land developer Curley Duson.
In 1927 the St. Theresa Catholic Church was completed. Cotton farms were the main source of agricultural income in the region. Three cotton gins existed in Duson until the mid-1960s. Two of them were destroyed by fire, the third was demolished.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Duson lived in 1672 people. The population density was 251.2 people per km ². There were 724 housing units at an average of 108.8 per km ². The Duson population was 73.98% White , 25.24% Black or African American , 0.06% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.06% said they were racial and 0, 66% named two or more races. 0.36% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Duson were distributed to 644 households out of which 38.2% had children under 18 years of age. 41.6% of households were married, 20.5% had a female head of household without a husband and 29.7% did not form families. 25.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.9% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07.
The population was divided into 30.0% minors, 10.5% 18–24 year olds, 29.3% 25–44 year olds, 19.6% 45–64 year olds and 10.6% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 women there were 93.3 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 85.1 men.
The median household income in Duson was 21,071 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 24,886 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 26,250 compared with $ 15,476 for women. The per capita income was $ 10,520. 31.5% of the population and 27.5% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 42.7% of minors and 29.5% of the age group 65 and over.
